Certified Surgical First Assistant (NHRMC Only)
**Overview** Allied health professionals employed by member of the Medical Staff as OR Technicians do not function independently and are continually under direct supervision of the supervising staff member while in the Hospital. This position may provide professional care under physician supervision. Primary Job Duties: 1. Placement of urinary drainage. 2. Perform tasks of positioning, and draping of the patient. 3. Retractor placement and manipulation. 4. Closely observing the operative field at all times to determine the surgeon's need for surgical exposure. 5. Demonstrating the necessary stamina for sustained retration. 6. Demonstrating regard for the surrounding tissues when placing the retractor and when exerting pressure with the retractor. 7. Managing instruments in the operative field to prevent obstruction of the surgeon's view. 8. Anticipating exposure needs based on knowledge of the surgeon's preference, procedure, and anatomical structures. 9. Applying the electrocautery (bovie) to clamps, vessels, and tissue in a safe and knowledgeable manner. 10. Sponging bodily fluids and stylizing suction techniques. 11. Applying clamps to vessels and tying off or applying electrocautery to the vessel. 12. Placing hemostatic sutures or clamps. 13. Placing hemoclips. 14. Having knowledge of and properly applying basic and advanced knot tying techniques in order to have a secure knot. 15. Using both one- and two-handed knot techniques appropriate to surgeon preference and surgical circumstance. 16. Using proper deep tying technique in order to securely tie off deep structures without damaging tissue or losing control of vessels. 17. Controlling the tension of a knot so that tissue is approximated but not strangulated. 18. Keeping current on knot tying skills and techniques through hospital-approved training and certification. 19. Correctly approximating the layers of the wound using suturing materials and techniques that are appropriate to the tissue and according to surgeon preference. 20. Demonstrating a knowledge of different types of wound closure and suturing techniques appropriate to the kinds of tissue and the different layers of the wound. 21. Correctly applying skin staples and appropriately approximating the _skin_ to best facilitate the process. 22. Keeping current on suturing skills and techniques through hospital-approved training. 23. Injecting topical anesthetic medication into skin and/or subcutaneous tissue. 24. Stabilizing the drain by suturing it to the patient’s skin. 25. Cleaning the surgical wound and applying the dressing. **Qualifications** **Education:** High school diploma. Completion of an accredited Surgical Tech program. Requires ability to read, write and speak English. **Licensure / Certifications:** Certified Surgical Tech (CST). Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFSA) by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required.
