Reporting to Morehouse School of Medicine Executive Vice President of Health Affairs and Dean (EVP/Dean) Dr. J. Adrian Tyndall, the Chair of the Department of Medicine will partner
with the EVP/Dean in articulating, directing, and executing on MSM’s vision, mission, and strategies.
The new Chair will have the responsibility for the development and maintenance of efficient and effective operations and the promotion of collaborative work relationships between faculty and staff at all levels.
The Chair will oversee all components of the academic mission including oversight of active research programs, teaching and education of medical students, and oversight of residency
programs. He/she will also oversee the expansion of the outpatient and inpatient clinical enterprise of the Department of Medicine and will ensure the highest level of clinical quality and patient safety and will be provided the resources to actively recruit and retain talented faculty who will be
active in contributing to MSM’s mission areas of clinical care, education, and research with the goal of become a leading and trusted force in academic medicine.
The Chair will be responsible for creating a high performing Department through a commitment to evidence-based care, process improvement, and the development of a quality improvement program that will bring the highest level of quality and outcomes to the patient population

The Department of Medicine is the largest of MSM’s clinical departments. Its faculty members provide clinical services at Grady Hospital and its clinics, the Atlanta VA Medical Center, and at Morehouse Healthcare. The Department has the Divisions of Cardiology, General Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care, Geriatrics, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, and Neurology. The Internal Medicine
Residency Program has over 80 residents. A new Neurology Residency Program had its first class start in July 2023. There are established fellowship programs in Cardiology and Pulmonary –Critical Care and a newly approved fellowship in Gastroenterology will bring in its first fellows in July 2025.
The graduates of the residency program have had considerable success in a diverse set of endeavors, and they always speak to the opportunity and training they received at MSM. The Department is attractive to job candidates as demonstrated by the success in recruitment of new
faculty. Faculty members have been successful in achieving promotion to associate and full professor. The Department operates as a team and a family. Student and Residency Excellence
Over the last five years, the department has continued to make gains in the education arena. In terms of our undergraduate 3rd and 4th year clerkships, the numbers of students on each
rotation have increased. In the 3rd year clerkship, our students are now successfully rotating at our Columbus Campus, Grady Memorial Hospital and Atlanta Va. We have expanded the
rotations offered to our 4th year students. Our students report excellent experience during their rotations and are passing their shelf tests.
In terms of GME, we have expanded our residency program in Internal Medicine from 72 to 83 positions with additional growth expected. Other highlights include:
• Expanded our Cardiovascular Fellowship to include a potential research year and have graduated
two classes.
• Obtained ACGME approval for our Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship with the inaugural class anticipated to graduate in June 2024.
• Received ACGME approval and have begun a Neurology Residency with the inaugural class
completing their first year in June 2024.
• Received ACGME approval to begin a Gastroenterology Fellowship due to begin July 2025.
• Completed ACGME evaluation and approval of all programs without any citations.
World-Class Team
Recruitment: In the last five years, MSM recruited 29 new faculty members with a distribution of: four cardiologists, three neurologists, one infectious disease, one hematologist/
oncologist, four gastroenterologists, three pulmonary/critical care, one nephrologist, 11 general internal medicine, and one researcher. We are currently recruiting an additional
16 faculty.
Promotions: Over the last five years, we have promoted 21 faculty members with the following distribution: one instructor to assistant professor; eight assistant professors to
associate professor; and 12 associate professors to professor.
Advancing Health Equity
Research and National Societies: Throughout the last five years, our faculty have continued to increase their scholarly activity. These accomplishments include:
• MSM faculty members are prolific authors who have achieved 182 publications in the past five years. Our residents continue to be leaders in scholarly activity at the Region ACP Meeting.
• MSM received the GME Award for the Program with the Most Scholarly Activities in November 2022. We were selected for the award after having the most PubMed ID
publications by faculty and residents compared to other MSM GME programs.
• Our department has two faculty members that have achieved membership in the National Academy of Sciences.
• Our faculty cumulatively belongs to 187 national societies.
• The divisions of Pulmonary/Critical Care, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, and General Internal Medicine are active producers of grant funding.
• Over the last five years, the Department of Medicine allocated more than $28.3 million dollars in
grant support.
