Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Montclair State University is seeking a dynamic and visionary Chancellor to lead the operations of Montclair State University’s Bloomfield Campus, located in Bloomfield, NJ approximately six miles from Montclair State University. Reporting directly to the President of Montclair State University, the Chancellor will play a pivotal role in integrating the Campus – including Bloomfield College of Montclair State University (BCMSU) – into the larger university framework. The Chancellor will work in close partnership with the Dean of the College to define a distinctive student experience designed to integrate with the academic programs of Montclair State University and shape the future of New Jersey’s only four-year Predominantly Black Institution. In coordination with the MSU President, the Chancellor will be the lead representative of BCMSU in the community including interactions with elected officials, community leaders and donors. This position requires a strategic and collaborative leader who can navigate complex political and organizational environments, work effectively as a member of the University’s senior leadership team and effectively represent the Bloomfield campus as its primary spokesperson.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operational Leadership: As the senior executive officer for the Bloomfield campus, the Chancellor has responsibility for all non-academic operations of the Bloomfield Campus, ensuring alignment with the policies and strategic goals of Montclair State University. Manage administrative functions in close coordination with the Vice Presidents of Montclair State University while promoting efficiency and innovation. The Chancellor will chair the “Chancellor’s Council” made up of the Dean of the Bloomfield Campus and MSU senior officials (or their representatives) to ensure alignment of all Bloomfield campus operations.

Collaboration with Academic Leadership: Work closely with the Dean of Bloomfield College of Montclair State University to provide administrative and operational support for academic initiatives. The academic programming of the College falls within the purview of the Dean who reports to the University Provost. 

Promote Integration: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with university vice presidents and other key stakeholders to align College initiatives with the President’s priorities, including but not limited to partnering with the University’s Chief Operating Officer regarding the planning and execution of capital projects and day-to-day campus operations.  

Budget Management: Work in concert with the University’s Chief Operating Officer to highlight budgetary and project needs to ensure the effective allocation of resources to support operational needs.

External Representation: Serve as a spokesperson for the Bloomfield Campus in political, legislative, and community settings in coordination with the University President and/or University Communications. Advocate for the University’s interests and build partnerships with external organizations, government agencies, and alumni for the benefit of the Bloomfield Campus, including Bloomfield College of MSU.

Strategic Partnerships: Establish relationships that lead to partnerships to advance the aspirations of Bloomfield College of MSU and other MSU programs housed at Bloomfield Campus. This includes partnerships that drive enrollment, create revenue through facilities utilization, and promote community support for BC/MSU.

Development and Alumni Relations: Engage Bloomfield alumni and other constituencies to build affinity and investment, working with University VP for development and alumni engagement. 

Community Engagement: Foster community relationships and enhance the campus’s usage and visibility through outreach programs, public events, and partnerships with local organizations.

Crisis Management: Engage in crisis response efforts as necessary in coordination with Montclair State University officials and local law enforcement, ensuring effective communication and resolution strategies are in place.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Proven experience in senior leadership roles within higher education 

Strong understanding of university operations and governance,

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse stakeholders.

Strategic thinker with strong problem-solving skills and a results-oriented approach.

PREFERRED: 

Ph.D. or other terminal degree.

Experience with University operations in a multi-campus environment.

Demonstrated ability to engage with legislative and political entities, and experience in advocacy and public relations.
