Summary:
This position exists to assist patients, families and health care workers in meeting their religious/spiritual needs. The priest-chaplain is also responsible for the sacramental needs of Roman Catholic patients, presiding at Mass, leading other special liturgies and providing counsel on church teaching. The priest-chaplain will also share emergency “on call” duties for pastoral and sacramental needs.
Position Responsibilities:
Priest-chaplain will attempt to visit all new admissions on his assigned units, giving priority to referrals from various sources, to assess the level of spiritual distress, providing appropriate interventions to patients and their families/friends in meeting their religious and spiritual needs through visitation, sacramental (especially Eucharist, Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick) and ritual ministry. The priest-chaplain will also document the outcomes of these interventions in patient record.
To provide the same comprehensive pastoral care to the health care workers and volunteers as needed and requested.
Share in the liturgical life of the hospital community by presiding at Mass on a rotating basis and other liturgical services throughout the year..
Participate in interdisciplinary care rounds on assigned units and serve on various committees such as Bioethics Committee, to act as advisor to the health care team on religious and/or spiritual issues impacting the plan of care.
The priest-chaplain will share “on call” 24/7 coverage providing pastoral/sacramental needs to patients and their families as requested.
Position Qualifications Required / Experience Required:
Minimum 3 years as ordained clergy in parish or institutional ministry
Required Education:
Master of Divinity or equivalent
Training/Certifications/Licensure:
Certification by a COMMISS sponsored organization (NACC, ACP) preferred or certification within three years of hire.
Ordination and ecclesiastical endorsement by the Ordinary of the Diocese or one’s religious superior (for priests only).
