Job Description
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
DOC seeks to recruit a Chaplain for its Correction Assistance Response for Employees (C.A.R.E.)/Wellness Unit. The selected candidate will provide spiritual care, emotional support, and counseling services to uniform and non-uniform members of service. The Chaplain will promote the well-being of employees by offering compassionate care, crisis intervention, and guidance during times of personal or professional difficulty. The Chaplain will collaborate with other internal and external wellness professionals to create a supportive environment by which employees can seek assistance in coping with the unique challenges of working in a correctional setting. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Afford spiritual and emotional support by offering confidential services to members
of service regardless of their faith tradition, belief system, or cultural background.
- Provide one-on-one and/or group counseling sessions with employees dealing with stress, trauma,
grief, and personal or professional challenges while ensuring timely and routine follow-ups.
- Respond to critical incidents (e.g., staff injury, traumatic events, or death of staff and/or their family
members) to offer immediate emotional and spiritual support to the staff member and when needed,
colleagues at their assigned command.
- Collaborate with the members from the C.A.R.E./Wellness Unit to develop and implement holistic
wellness programs to promote emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual strength.
- Offer prayers, prepare and deliver invocations/benedictions during special events or as requested by
staff; lead memorial services or religious observances.
- Serve as liaison between staff and external faith-based organizations/community-based organizations to
ensure additional resources and support services.
- Provide interfaith services and/or coordinate with faith leaders to accommodate the diverse spiritual
needs of the correctional staff.
- Perform other related work
Qualifications
Ecclesiastical endorsement by the official endorsing agency of the candidate's faith or denomination, and by the Committee on Chaplaincies.
