What we want The role of the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) is to develop and maintain a chemical hygiene plan and to serve as a technical resource for laboratories and EHS. The CHO will be expected to support existing lab safety programs and develop new programs in areas where there may be deficiencies to minimize risk in the laboratory. The position will provide guidance on safe chemical practices, risk assessments, control measures, PPE, emergency procedures, and perform incident investigations. Emphasis will be given to high hazard chemicals to assess processes and procedures in the lab. The CHO will also develop safety training programs related to chemical hygiene and manage chemical inventory for Tier II reporting. Position Details: Ability to tolerate laboratory environments and moderate exposure to extreme temperature, dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises, and chemical substances. Requires ability to wear personal protective equipment including respirator, and protective clothing. Required Education and Experience: + Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. + Ten years of experience in an environmental health and safety field or related. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: + Working knowledge of environmental safety and health rules, regulations, and standards. + Must have computer skills in such areas as spreadsheets, word processing, and relational databases, and must be proficient with the use of Microsoft Office software. + Excellent verbal and written communication skills. + Must be able to speak in front of a group of people. + Requires ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others as well as work independently. Preferred Qualifications: + Master’s degree or PhD in chemistry or chemical engineering. + Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer. CHMM, CSP, or CIH. + Experience in higher education or research environments Essential Duties/Tasks Program Management: + Develop and maintain a Chemical Hygiene Plan and other plans related to chemical safety, such as the Hazard Communication Program, Workplace Chemical Protection Program (WCPP) for methylene chloride, etc. + Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to promote chemical awareness to include a culture of safety and compliance with chemical hygiene practices and regulations + Collaborate with laboratories and other areas of campus to maintain accurate chemical inventories and compile the annual Tier II report + Provide subject matter expertise in chemical safety for laboratories and programs within Environmental Health and Safety + Provide administrative and compliance oversight for ATF-regulated research explosives Hazard Assessment: + Evaluate chemical risks in research laboratories focusing on high hazard chemicals + Assist with developing and reviewing standard operating procedures, primarily for high hazard chemicals and risks + Investigate chemical-related incidents, spills, or exposures and document incidents to include recommended preventive measures + Review construction and renovation plans for laboratories Training: + Provide guidance and training on control measures and PPE for chemicals + Develop training curriculum as needed for chemical hygiene + Provide training as needed for chemical-related EHS spill response Emergency Response: + Responds as needed with other EHS personnel to emergencies and assists with emergency responders as needed Why Texas A&M University?
