Job Description
The role of EH&S Chemical Hygiene Officer is to oversee Chemical Hygiene compliance and safety programs as well as customer service activities associated with management of the research chemical inventory of the Gilead, Foster City campus.
General Responsibilities of EH&S Team Members
The EH&S Manager will serve as an agent of change within their areas of responsibility while effectively ensuring compliance and proliferation of best practices throughout customer organizations.
Basic essential duties for all EH&S team members include:
Identify, document and reduce potential workplace hazards, including accident investigation, through corrective actions and making recommendations to management.Develop, communicate and conduct audits, inspections, training and program development.Provide program specific and general EH&S training, including New Hire Orientation for employees.Serving on the Emergency Response Team requiring periodic 24 hour on-call availabilityEstablish a positive rapport with staff, scientists and management to ensure a high level of customer service and serve as a primary point of contact for customer groups.Assist with implementing general elements of the Foster City EH&S Program, as defined by local, state and federal agencies.Essential Duties and Job Functions of the Role
Specific responsibilities for this role focus on independent management, with minimal supervision, of all Chemical Hygiene Operations at the Gilead, Foster City campus to ensure compliance and advancement of culture while providing world class customer service.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
For EH&S programs assigned, ensure program and reporting requirements, as set by local, state and federal agencies, and as defined by internal policies.Identification, development and tracking of service level metrics to drive continuing improvement and efficiency of processes and procedures.Ensure timely completion, submission and documentation for various licensing, permitting, inspection and training requirements for the programs identified above.Serve as an EH&S representative in cross functional projects and server as subject matter expert as need to support internal EH&S initiatives.Review facility/space designs of renovations or new constructions to identify potential EH&S impacts and provide recommendations to proactively manage these impacts.Supervise personnel overseeing contingent workforce support as needed.Chemical Management Services: fine chemical reagent inventory receiving, tracking and delivery, internal transfer and ensure proper labeling and segregation of materials in storage.Replenishment Services: Ordering, receiving, and stocking of routine chemical inventory supplies for research departments.Solvent Services: Ordering, receiving, and stocking of regularly used solvent inventory to support research operations, including maintenance of building solvent delivery system supply.Oversee all regulatory compliance associated with the role of Chemical Hygiene Officer as defined by 29 CFR 1910.1450 and 8CCR 5191:Audit and edit the Chemical Hygiene PlanEvaluate the need for and ensure timely completion of all necessary employee exposure monitoring activities.Maintain chemical hygiene training course.Assist with identifying and scheduling employee medical surveillance activities as warranted.Identify and refer employees who require evaluation/participation in the respiratory protection program.Maintenance of all recordkeeping associated with chemical hygiene regulatory compliance.Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry/Biology/Environmental or related field, with at least 6 years of relevant experience or Master of Science in Chemistry/Biology/Environmental or related field, with at least 4 years of relevant experience. Experience with synthetic chemistry laboratory research is preferred.Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or related industry preferred.Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT and other related regulatory requirements.Demonstrated experience in interacting with regulatory agencies.Demonstrated experience in working in collaborative teams.Demonstrated experience with working under minimal supervision.Demonstrated success with leading manager and peers without authority. Anticipate needs and problems while creating and implementing solutions.Excellent written and oral communication skills.The ability effectively shift priorities and work at a rapid pace is required.
