Chief Compliance Officer

The Chief Compliance Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing and managing the Sonic Healthcare USA (“SHUSA”) Compliance Program to ensure that SHUSA personnel and personnel at its affiliated laboratories and anatomic pathology practices (collectively referred to as the “Company”) operate in full compliance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements, as well as internal policies and industry best practices. The CCO will manage the U.S. compliance team and work with Company compliance personnel to institute a robust and effective compliance program consistent with program guidelines and expectations of HHS/OIG. The CCO will have a comprehensive understanding of various healthcare regulations and the ability to foster a culture of compliance within the Company. The CCO will be tasked with addressing various issues and risks to the Company and be knowledgeable in the following subject areas: risk management, privacy/HIPAA, audits and investigations, managed care and governmental billing, regulatory oversight and reporting, compliance policies, training & education programs, strategic planning and service as the leader of the Company’s U.S. Compliance Committee.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Management: Demonstrate the Company’s commitment to the SHUSA Core Values and Medical Leadership ethos and ethical business practices. The CCO sets the tone at the top to facilitate consistent messaging throughout the Company and creates a culture of compliance throughout the organization. Acts as the subject matter Compliance expert and resource for SHUSA’s laboratories and anatomic pathology practices to implement local aspects of the Compliance Program.  Provides and facilitates the resolution of complex business issues that may interface with federal or state laws,  agencies or regulatory bodies. Serve as the leader and mentor to junior members of the Compliance team.

Risk Management: Identify, assess and mitigate compliance risks to the Company including fraud, waste and abuse and conflicts of interest. Lead efforts to manage and resolve compliance-related issues proactively.

Regulatory Oversight: Ensure the Company’s adherence to regulatory standards including, but not limited to, HIPAA, CLIA, CMS, HHS/OIG and other applicable federal and state regulations.

Policy Development & Implementation: Develop, implement and update compliance policies and procedures applicable to the healthcare, laboratory and pathology industries.

Audits & Investigations: Oversee the planning and execution of audits to assess compliance with internal policies and external regulations. Investigate any potential compliance violations and recommend corrective actions, as needed. 

Regulatory Reporting & Documentation: Maintains the compliance reporting hotline, documentations systems and ensure the Company timely and accurately reports compliance matters to appropriate governmental agencies, ensuring full transparency with governmental or regulatory agencies/bodies.

Training & Education: Design and deliver ongoing compliance training and education programs for staff at all levels to ensure awareness and understanding of compliance standards and requirements.

Collaboration: Work closely with other senior executives, departments, and legal counsel to promote compliance initiatives and resolve complex compliance issues across the Company.

Strategic Planning: Advise senior leadership on the development and implementation of strategies for managing compliance risks and improving compliance-related processes.

External Relationships: Maintain relationships with regulatory agencies, industry groups, and external auditors to stay informed on current and emerging regulatory changes.

Continuous Improvement: Lead initiatives to enhance and streamline compliance processes, ensuring that the Company remains ahead of evolving regulatory requirements.

Compliance Committee: Lead the Company Compliance Committee and regularly report to Company leadership on all compliance issues and program activities.

Job Qualifications:

Required:

Bachelor’s Degree and experience in compliance roles with healthcare companies, managed care organizations or governmental entities (e.g. laboratory, pathology, medical device, hospital operations, Medicare/Medicaid, CMS, HHS/OIG, private payor entities or the like)

Advanced degree preferred (e.g. JD, MBA or MHA).  

5 years healthcare regulatory or compliance related experience that includes a leadership role or management experience in healthcare compliance

Excellent working knowledge of healthcare compliance, HIPAA, federal and state privacy laws, Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, other fraud and abuse laws and Medicare/Medicaid billing requirements

Skills:

Strong leadership, team management and mentoring skills

Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to effectively operate in a matrix environment and the ability to communicate effectively with Company staff at all levels, whether orally or in writing, to convey important information to promote a compliance culture and compliance with rules and regulations applicable to the Company’s operations

Ability to interpret and apply complex regulations and laws to Company’s business

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Detail oriented with the ability to manage a demanding workload, exercise discretion and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced and evolving environment

High level of integrity and ethical conduct

Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information

Perform other duties as assigned.
