Reuters is looking for an experienced, energetic and resourceful reporter to break news, dig for exclusives and deliver ambitious, agenda-setting stories in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East’s economic and diplomatic powerhouse. The successful candidate will come armed with ideas, a track record in building business and political sources and the drive and patience to keep pushing when the going gets tough and routes to a story seem blocked. They will need to have an ability to write across the file, ranging from tackling energy stories in the world’s biggest oil exporter and digging into the investment decisions of its huge sovereign wealth fund to pushing for diplomatic scoops and charting the kingdom’s dramatic social changes.
The Chief Correspondent will need to hit the ground running. A royal succession looms that will cement the role of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as he tackles an enormous in-tray of demands with President Donald Trump back in office and amid a U.S. push for a deal to normalise ties between the kingdom and Israel following the Gaza ceasefire deal. The successful candidate will be ready to dig deep into business stories as the crown prince seeks to deliver his 2030 Vision. They will need well-honed skills to build sources in the investment community and corporate world, as well as in the PIF sovereign wealth fund that is a driving force behind huge projects such as NEOM and the oil giant Aramco on which the kingdom’s wealth still relies.
The person hired for this senior role will have the diplomatic skills to navigate sensitivities in the kingdom while adhering rigorously to Reuters Trust Principles of unbiased and balanced reporting. They will also have the management skills to guide and encourage any direct reports.
The position will be based in Riyadh and report directly to the Gulf Bureau Chief.
