Under the direction of the President & CEO, and in collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Chief Development Officer plans and executes effective resource development strategies ensuring adequate progress against stated goals. The Chief Development Officer both directly solicits and supports the President & CEO in positioning the Board of Directors, other volunteers, and staff in soliciting major gifts and grants from individuals, small businesses, corporations, and foundations.
Responsibilities Strategic Planning In collaboration with the President & CEO and Board of Directors, develop and implement a strategic plan for single and multi-year resource development efforts: Prepare and execute a comprehensive plan that outlines specific expectations for all development efforts. Cultivate potential planned gift prospects, develop proposals, negotiate terms, and conduct solicitations of individual donors and/or their attorneys or accountants. Implement an annual fund campaign to acquire, retain, and upgrade annual donors through direct mail, email, social media, and face-to-face solicitation. Manage record keeping for Major Gifts donors, assuring effective administrative and operational support functions are in place, as well as timely acknowledgement of gifts. Research and analyze donor base and recommend solicitation strategies. Evaluate giving trends of individual donors and determine those with potential for upgrading to Major Gift status. Ensure implementation of special events (at the organization, county, and individual club level). Provide support for various fundraising projects/initiatives assigned by the President & CEO, such as endowments, major gifts, planned giving and grants. Ensure proper management of grants, including researching available grants, writing grant proposals, reporting, tracking, and compliance. Develop guidelines for planned giving and major giving (Circle of Champions) marketing campaigns. Provide campaign consulting for capital or endowment campaigns from vendor selection, feasibility, goal setting, and implementation Ensure the evaluation of all development activities and identify opportunities to improve results. Leadership Provide strategic direction and leadership to the organization, President & CEO and Board of Directors in the effective operation of all fund development activities required to support Club operations and deliver programs within the community. Development activities include, but are not limited to comprehensive annual campaigns, written Development Plan, special events, grant management, grant writing, founders’ campaigns, capital campaigns, and planned giving to support the vision of growth and sustainability throughout the organization. Lead a team of highly trained development professionals to achieve their organizational and individual quarterly/annual goals. The team currently consists of Regional Resource Development Directors (2), Director of Administration, Director of Marketing, Director of Federal Grants, Food Program Manager, Grant Manager, and Resource Development Coordinator. Ensure productive and effective performance of all development staff by creating an inclusive culture, offering training and development opportunities, holding individual monthly check-in meetings with each team member, holding regular weekly, monthly and quarterly staff meetings, and evaluating progress of goals regularly. Resource Management Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of the organization’s annual budget, controlling expenditures within budget and maintaining donor and financial records in accordance with standards. Control fund raising expenses related to planned gift solicitations within budget. Board Engagement & Development Identify, recruit and train board members or other volunteers to participate in solicitation and other income development activities. Encourage and support board committees and county advisory councils responsible for planning and implementing development activities. Recommend prospective board members to the Board Development Committee based on knowledge of the individual’s giving and/or volunteer history. Develop professional relationships with Board members through individual and group meetings when appropriate to support their fundraising efforts. Attend all Corporate Board meetings and provide a comprehensive update and discussion regarding Resource Development strategies, activities, special events and goals. Advisory Councils Coordinate the Resource Development team’s support of all Advisory Councils. Ensure attendance by a Resource Development staff member at each meeting, creation of an agenda for the meetings, support local special events (i.e. Be Great Breakfasts, Dinners, and larger events hosted by the Advisory Councils). Committees: Resource Development Committee: Serve as the lead coordinator for the standing Resource Development Committee. Meet regularly with the Resource Development Committee Chair to create an agenda and action plan for the committee members. Foundation Board: Attend BGCCP Foundation Meetings to support the CEO and the Chair of the Foundation. Provide Regular updates to the Foundation as directed. Advocacy Committee: Will directly engage in Legislative outreach efforts at the Federal, State and Local level in support of the Committee’s goals. Attend Committee meetings and supply regular updates, strategies and support to Committee members and the CEO. Partnership Development Represent the Club at networking and community events. Develop strategic alliances with community leaders and local officials. Develop collaborative partnerships with other youth serving organizations, members, parents, families, funders, and community organizations. Increase visibility of Club development activities and maintain good public relations. Actively nurture a culture of philanthropy and spirit of collaboration among staff and board. Provide information to Club staff, executives, board members and volunteers in solicitation techniques and involve them in Major Gifts activities. Develop strategic alliances with community leaders, donors and prospects. Develop collaborative partnerships with other youth serving organizations, members, parents, families, funders and community organizations. Relationships Donor: Develop and execute strategic, tailored donor stewardship strategy that deepens the connection of the donor to the mission. Maintain regular cadence of communication with donors engaging solicitors, board members and executive staff as appropriate. Internal: Maintain verbal and written contact with the President & CEO, Board of Directors, Advisory Councils, partners, peers and volunteers for the purpose of informing, reporting progress regarding activities and planned programs, and to coordinate events. Reinforce a culture of philanthropy by maintaining excellent communication with staff and by attending meetings with staff outside of resource development. External: Maintain verbal and written contact with other agencies, business leaders, community groups, board of directors of such organizations, and the media for the purpose of exchanging information and ideas, and fundraising. Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors. Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A minimum of three (3) years of work experience in a non-profit agency, specifically in the fundraising field, sales or marketing. PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS Ten (10) or more years of work experience in a non-profit agency preferred. Thorough knowledge of fundraising techniques, and sources of funding for non-profit agencies and organizations. Knowledge of the mission, objectives, policies, programs and procedures of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and of the principles and practices of non-profit organizations and youth development services. Ability to organize and coordinate fundraising operations. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Club leaders, Board members, volunteers, community groups, and other related agencies. Knowledge of accessing and managing donor data base. Strong record of public speaking.
