Chief Engineer HVAC Data Center

Key Responsibilities:

Lead HVAC Operations: Oversee and provide hands-on preventive maintenance to the day-to-day operations and maintenance of all HVAC systems, cooling towers, CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) units, chillers, air handlers, and related mechanical equipment in the data center. Team Leadership: Manage a team of HVAC technicians, providing leadership, guidance, and training to ensure optimal performance and adherence to safety protocols. System Performance Monitoring: Continuously monitor and evaluate the performance of HVAC and cooling systems, ensuring the cooling capacity meets the demands of the data center’s equipment. Implement necessary adjustments and upgrades. Preventive Maintenance: Develop, implement, and monitor a robust preventive maintenance program for all HVAC systems, ensuring systems are regularly serviced and reliable. Troubleshooting & Repairs: Diagnose HVAC system failures and manage troubleshooting efforts. Lead efforts to repair emergency situations to minimize downtime. Vendor Management: Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized services, such as installations, repairs, and equipment replacements. Manage contracts and ensure compliance with service level agreements (SLAs). Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding HVAC operations and data center safety protocols. Conduct safety audits and risk assessments. Budget Management: Develop and manage the HVAC-related budget for the HVAC department, ensuring the cost-effective use of resources while maintaining high system reliability. Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, system performance, repairs, and upgrades. Prepare regular reports on HVAC system status for senior management.

 

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, (preferred), Electrical Engineering, or a related field (preferred), or relevant industry certifications (e.g., HVACR, LEED, etc.).

Experience:

Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in HVAC systems management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within a critical facility, preferably in a data center or mission-critical environment. Proven experience with large-scale HVAC systems, chillers, cooling towers, CRAC units, and air handling systems

Certifications:

Professional certifications such as HVAC Technician License, LEED certification, or other industry-relevant certifications (preferred). CFC/ EPA Refrigerant Recovery certification

Skills:

Extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, cooling technologies, energy efficiency, and data center operations. Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills in complex HVAC systems. Leadership and team management experience in a high-pressure, critical environment. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Familiarity with energy-saving technologies and best practices for data center operations. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move heavy objects and handle equipment maintenance and repairs.

 

Work Conditions:

Ability to work on-site in a data center environment with 24/7 operations. Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and be on-call for emergencies as needed. May require occasional travel for site inspections or vendor meetings.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Must possess basic math skills to include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Ability to perform basic operations using units of American money and weight measurement, and volume.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and sometimes complex written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to climb ladders, lift and carry 50 or more pounds, distinguish colors for electrical work and tolerate confined spaces. Work will involve heights and seasonal temperature extremes.
