This is a **Chief of Staff / Director Assistant (DA) role supporting the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Global Government Affairs (GGA) at American Express** . The DA will be located in Washington, D.C. and will report to the EVP, Global Government Affairs—who reports to the Chief Legal Counsel. The Government Affairs function is of critical importance within the company. The Global Government Affairs team at American Express represents the Company’s perspective on public policy issues before legislative bodies, and executive and regulatory agencies around the world, and works closely with Company’s Executive Committee members on issues of importance to American Express. The U.S. Regulatory Relations team within Government Affairs is responsible for managing relationships between American Express and our U.S. regulatory agencies. This team coordinates and guides dialogue which leads to a greater understanding of regulatory expectations within AXP/AENB, and the demonstration of such to the examiner community.
The Director Assistant will be a key member of the Global Government Affairs leadership team and will have responsibility for a broad range of activities, including team communications, executive-level presentations, and various initiatives to ensure business objectives are achieved. The DA will also work closely with the broader team and key business partners. Additionally, the DA will manage operational tasks for the office to ensure all functions run smoothly and efficiently, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the team. The DA will possess outstanding stakeholder management, thought leadership, strategic thinking, communication, and organizational skills and will have a proven track record of excellence, operating independently and within a high performing, fast paced environment.
**Responsibilities include:**
+ Serve as Chief of staff and thought partner to the EVP of GGA and provide strategic support on a range of complex issues and projects as required.
+ Support team initiatives such as executive preparation for meetings with government officials, to include written communications.
+ Collaborate across the entire GGA team to develop high quality presentations and talking points for key internal and external audiences on various topics.
+ Partner with the EVP and Global Government Affairs team on strategic initiatives; own and manage special projects.
+ Balance the management of day-to-day business priorities alongside longer-term strategic deliverables.
+ Liaise closely with the State, Federal, International and U.S. Regulatory Relations team across a range of important legislative, regulatory and policy priorities.
+ Organize and facilitate leadership team meetings - develop objectives, set the agenda and generate content.
+ Work closely with the broader General Counsel’s Organization, providing timely and comprehensive work products for use with internal and external stakeholders.
+ Effectively interact with the GGA leadership team to identify, prioritize, and resolve issues.
+ Design and coordinate content/agendas for key internal and external meetings (i.e. Capitol Hill, trade associations, U.S. Global Government Affairs, Board, Committee, Regulatory, etc.).
+ Oversee Global Government Affairs financials, manage detailed expenditure tracking, and prepare reports for the EVP with recommendations for addressing budgetary shortfalls and variances.
+ Partner closely with the Colleague Experience Group on key talent programs, ensuring high quality and timely submissions.
+ Prepare invoice reconciliations, manage vendor payment matters, review/approve invoice payments, and create annual budgets.
+ Serve as the primary point of contact for DC office property managers, lease renewals, contract workers, renovations, facility upgrades, technology projects, workspace management, and access requests.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with proficiency in business communication, Excel and PowerPoint.
+ Demonstrated ability to influence at all levels and achieve results.
+ Extensive experience in project management, with superior organization and planning skills and a keen attention to detail.
+ Ability to effectively function in a dynamic, deadline-intensive environment, handling multiple tasks and taking on new responsibilities.
+ Proven track record of developing working relationships across organizations and at all levels.
+ Strong integrity and excellent judgement required as well as the discretion necessary to handle confidential information.
+ Ability to deliver effective counsel to senior leaders.
+ Ability to thrive in a large, complex and matrix organizational structure.
+ Team player adaptable to a diverse group of colleagues, internal business clients, and external stakeholders.
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively to identify and pursue strategic business objectives.
+ Ability to gain credibility, manage expectations, and develop strong working relationships with colleagues and business clients; convey clear advice to clients.
+ High energy, team-oriented, self-starter, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
+ This role is hybrid (min. 3 days per week) and required to be based out of the Washington, DC office.
**Qualifications**
Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
