Supporting the Woman and Child Program, the Child Life Specialist will promote optimum development of children, adolescents and families to maintain normal living patterns and to minimize psychological trauma.

 

In consultation with the health care team the Child Life Specialist will provide observations, assessments, procedural preparation and support as well as therapeutic interactions and activities that offer emotional support and developmentally appropriate education for children or adolescents related either to their diagnosis. Provide a variety of goal-directed play programs and opportunities for gaining a sense of mastery, self-expression, learning, and peer interaction Provide a variety of tools to help distract the patient and reduce anxiety, either through images, tools or methods Integrate research into practice and create, utilize and/or disseminate new knowledge.

 

 

What must you have?

Bachelor's Degree and postgraduate diploma in Child Life Studies or Early Childhood Education or Masters degree with child life courses.Child Life Certification preferred or must have eligibility for certification within the Child Life Council and become certified within one year of hire.

 

What else do you bring?

Minimum of 1 to 2 years experience, within the last 3 years, as a Child Life Specialist in an acute care setting.Demonstrated clinical expertise in assessments, planning and interventions for children, adolescents and their families.Demonstrated flexibility and the ability to provide interventions on an urgent basis.Demonstrated organization, problem-solving and conflict management skills.Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members.Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment.Demonstrated ability to provide formal and informal education to health care team regarding the Child Life role, the psychosocial needs of children/adolescents in health care crisis situations and the services provided to address these needs.Demonstrated understanding the role of community supports for the child/adolescent and family.Participates in ongoing professional development.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Proven attendance record.Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others and demonstrates behaviours consistent with Mackenzie Health’s Commitment to Caring.Models behaviour that is aligned with the values of Mackenzie Health – Excellence, Leadership and Empathy.Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for staff and clients within a challenging and exciting health care environment.
