Essential Functions Handles complex issues and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff. Is capable of handling basic to complex issues and problems, and provides leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group, as needed. Develops and presents guided tours, educational programs and workshops designed to engage the public and foster appreciation for the city’s heritage. Creates and maintains educational materials and resources. Works with local historical societies, museums and cultural organizations to promote awareness of the city’s history. Works with community partners and constituents on projects, events and exhibitions. Contributes written material to newsletters, social media, city websites and other outreach efforts. Develops and manages rotation of historical exhibits in city facilities, ensuring the inclusion of diverse perspectives and stories. Develops and manages the city’s oral history collection. Conducts oral history interviews, including preparatory research, outreach and follow-up, scheduling, securing signed release forms, recording, transcribing and working with the City Archivist to catalogue interviews for public access. Collaborates with Arts and History team members to design and produce exhibitions and programs aligned with approved interpretive direction for city history and interpretive plans for the city's cultural sites. Aims to engage and educate residents on various aspects of Boise history. Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training Bachelor's degree in American history or public history focusing on applied research or a closely related field and four years of experience coordinating public interpretation programs, conducting oral history interviews and developing and implementing exhibits and project ideas, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Knowledge of: United States and western U.S. history; public-facing interpretation and engagement techniques and practices; historical research methods; program management; archiving, documenting and related historical data organizational techniques; computer usage, including related software; public administration, including purchasing, contracting and maintenance, management and supervision of public records; and public outreach and involvement. Ability to: work both independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders; exhibit strong organizational skills and attention to detail; organize and manage multiple priorities and exercise sound independent judgment within areas of responsibility; organize multiple ongoing projects, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow up on assignments; develop partnerships with individuals and organizations; effectively represent the department and the city in meetings with governmental agencies, community groups, various businesses, professional and regulatory organizations and in meetings with individuals; organize and lead meetings to facilitate public participation; make presentations before large and small groups and prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, correspondence and policy documents; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation. Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record. Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training Master’s degree in American history or public history focusing on applied research or a closely related field and five years of applied history experience, including public interpretation programs, conducting oral history interviews and developing and implementing exhibits and project ideas. Familiarity with local history, urban history or western history Licensing And Other Requirements Valid state-issued driver's license.
