Position Summary:

This position is for a Civil Engineer in the Indiana Substation Engineering Department. The department is responsible for designing the physical layout for new substations, expansions to existing substations, upgrades, and failing equipment replacements that require engineering efforts to retrofit with the latest equipment. Substation Engineering is responsible for site grading, foundation design, structural design and analysis, and electrical analysis for grounding and lightning protection. We are a diverse group of civil engineers, electrical engineers, and designer/drafters that all work together to contribute to our project's success.

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy.  Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision.  Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied.

Responsibilities

Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.

Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.

Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.

Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.

Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.

Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic Qualifications Engineer I

Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree. (Spring 2025 graduates will be considered for this position)

Basic Qualifications Engineer II

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

2 years minimum required related experience

Desired Qualifications

Previous experience as a Duke Energy Intern or Co-Op.

Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Good written and oral communication skills.

Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

Understanding of basic principles of project management.

Experience in the utility industry.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

Working Conditions

Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
