Claim Services works on behalf of the University to protect against financial impacts of accidental loss. Claims Services, as part of Compliance and Risk Services, provides support to all University schools, colleges, and administrative units in the areas of claims management, workers’ compensation, claims recovery, and strategic loss control. As such it plays a critical role in supporting the University mission for teaching, research, and public service. Claims occur most frequently in the areas of, professional liability, automobile liability, general liability, employment practices, and, workers’ compensation with lower frequency in marine protection and indemnity and first party property claims. The Claim Services staff manage claims in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and pursuant to the delegations granted to the department through the Standing Orders of the Board of Regents. Under the general direction of the Director of Claim Services, the Claim Manager manages the University’s claims to achieve optimal outcomes for the University and its clients, balancing indemnity paid and expense incurred. The Claim Manager accomplishes his/her mission by regularly sharing pertinent claims information in a meaningful, constructive way to avoid, reduce, and mitigate risk. The Claim Manager will manage a variety of claims, including, but not limited to: medical professional liability, employment practices liability, auto liability, general liability, and property claims. Additionally, the Claim Manager may work in collaboration with the University's third party administrators and other consultants in the management of claims. The Claim Manager is a critical part of the risk management function for the University and its indemnitees and affiliates. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Managing claims and lawsuits, including: + Performing investigations, including in-person and on-site meetings, interviews and site work + Determining appropriate coverage source for entities and individuals named in claims and lawsuits + Collaborating with affiliates within legal privileges and insurance program + Evaluating liability and damages + Setting and updating reserves accurately + Analyzing defense and indemnification + Consulting with experts, attorneys and others + Communicating clearly and fairly with claimants + Selecting defense counsel + Developing and implementing claims action plans + Managing discovery + Negotiating settlements within delegated authority; obtaining authority in excess of delegation + Executing settlement agreements + Preparing and monitoring a case through trial + Communicating lessons learned from claims + Entering claim information consistent with data integrity standards in Claim Services. + Review, approve and process all legal expenses + Working with insurance carriers and the University’s broker on property claim recoveriesWork collaboratively on liability claims handled by the University’s third party claims administrator: + Assigning claims to third party administrator, under the direction of or delegated by the Director of Claims Services + Providing initial direction to third party administrator for each claim and collaborate on the direction of the claim as it progresses through optimal resolution + Work with third party administrator(s) on collaboration and meetings with UW stakeholders and indemnitees, investigation techniques, settlement evaluations, negotiations, and UW-specific matters + Managing payment processes for indemnity and expense incurred by third party claims administrator(s) + Reviewing and authorizing settlement of claims within delegated authority, as appropriate + Participating, in conjunction with the Director of Claims Services and others, in the regular evaluation and selection of claims administrator(s)Reporting and Communicating on Claims and Claim Trends, including: + Communicating with the Attorney General’s Office, Human Resources, Special Assistant Attorneys General, University schools, colleges and divisions, and consulting professionals. Making presentations to audiences of various sizes on claim trends and risk management. + Identifying and recommending policy changes related to liability lessons and trends. + Reporting claims to insurers as needed on claims and fulfilling their communication and timeliness requirements. + Reviewing applicable claim information with key departments, both through self-initiation and upon request.Fulfills claims-related safety and regulatory responsibilities and special projects as assigned, including: + Serving on relevant University committees as appropriate and as requested under the direction of the Director of Claims Services. + Providing information to and support for individual indemnitees against whom a claim or lawsuit has been made/filed. + Providing training and knowledge transfer to others in Claim Services and to other University audiences as appropriate. + Preparing reports to appropriate regulatory agencies including but not limited to CMS for Medicare beneficiaries and the State Disciplinary Boards and the National Practitioner Data Bank as required for medical malpractice claims. + Working on special projects or teams at the request of the Director, Claim Services. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS** + Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience with claims and litigation management, which may include: medical professional, general, auto, property, employment practices and/or other claims **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS** + Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and make presentations to large groups + Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply complex rules and regulation toward effective problem solving and claim evaluations + Ability to develop and deliver presentations conveying claim trends and information + Ability to effectively and efficiently use computer systems and databases, including detailed data entry + Demonstrated customer service skills + Superior negotiation skills + Excellent planning and organization skills and multi-tasking ability + Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and skill development **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS** + Public Sector claims experience + Third party claims administration experience + Associate in Claims and/or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation(s) **Application Process:** The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
