Claims Supervisor

UFG is looking for a Claims Supervisor to join our team. In this role you will lead a team of claims representatives to deliver outstanding results consistent with the company’s Gold Standard of Claims best practices.

Responsibilities:

As a member of the claims supervisor team, you will:

Operations management:

Review and analyze management reports to identify trends requiring action. Provide leadership, coaching and authority to Claims Representatives during the life cycle of the claims handling process to ensure that we deliver on our promises to agents, policyholders, and claimants according to claims best practices. Oversees assignment of claims to the appropriate representative based on staffing levels, claim workload/volume, severity & complexity as well as skillset of the claims representative. Assign appropriate authority to team members based on their skills, ability, and knowledge. Partners with claims excellence to conducts file reviews and evaluates file and claims loads to ensure staff are meeting company and departmental quality and customer service requirements.  Ensure that claims are managed in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, and case law. Build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers including but not limited to underwriters, auditors, marketing, and agents. Evaluate and triage litigated claims, assign to appropriate suit handling personnel and coordinate any additional follow-up investigation. Ensure that forms are filed (e.g. Index, PILR, Reinsurance, Reserve Notification, Risk Evaluation, and State form filings and DCI). Consistently assessing the timeliness and accuracy of reserves to ensure they comply with reserving philosophy. Maintain fiscal responsibility by staying aware of the expense factor in claims handling, whether by company representative, independent or defense counsel, to achieve company standards. Communicating with team members in alignment with the claim’s communication strategy.

Develop & manage a high performing team:

Talent management duties including recruiting, hiring, and retaining team members that support a high-performing, constructive culture. Foster an environment where everyone is inspired to do their best work. Build teams where everyone is empowered to contribute at their highest level. Foster innovative thinking and encourages team members to put forth and participate in new ideas to improve the team and the company. Act as change managers/leaders for their team by identifying and removing barriers to ensure adoption. Performance management duties including: Partnering with team member to set goals/expectations aligned with company’s business outcomes as well as individual professional development goals/objectives. Evaluating team members’ performance in the context of KPI’s, career pathing, identifying performance gaps and development opportunities to achieve desired goals and position objectives. Coaching & motivating to the needs of the individual team members. Mentor team members and/or peers throughout the company. Fostering collaboration and teamwork throughout the claim’s life cycle. Conflict resolution and recommending personnel actions Maintain appropriate documentation with regards to team members’ performance. Provide recommendations on promotion and salary that align with the company’s compensation philosophy. Promotes claims customer service excellence by building empathy and passion for the customer experience that exceeds customer expectations. Act as a SME, or identifying appropriate team members as SMEs, where expertise supports UFG initiatives.

Vision & strategy:

In collaboration with Claims Manager, defines and drives strategic and operational goals. Identifies and collaborates with leadership on opportunities as well as recommended solutions to drive continuous improvement. Communicates and understands company’s vision, mission and values, and culture to reinforce decisions, processes, and roles within context. Leads workstreams, when requested, to support departmental and company initiatives.

Qualifications: 

Education: (consistent with enterprise) 

HS Diploma required 4 year college degree preferred.

Certifications/Designations/Licenses: 

Industry certifications such as AIC, SCLA of the AEI, CPCU are preferred. Meet the appropriate state licensing requirements (or obtain required licensing).

Experience: 

5+ years of insurance industry experience 3+ years of claims handling experience Experience related to being a mentor, team or project leader preferred.

Working Conditions:  

General office environment with remote work as needed. Occasionally this job requires working irregular hours, evenings and weekends. Occasionally the job requires work in the field with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, smoke and soot. The position carries a high level of stress which results from working with insureds and claimants who have a high level of stress.
