Clinic Certified Medical Assistant

Job Summary: Responsible for ensuring efficient flow of patients in the clinical health care setting.

Minimum Education
Required:
- Successful completion of an accredited certified medical assistant training program by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), National Healthcare Association (NHA), American Association of Medical Assists (AAMA) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)
- Knowledge of general medical assistant functions.
- Current certified medical assistant certification required
- BLS certification required or must complete BLS certification with in the first two weeks of employment.

Essential Functions 

- Access all patient care documents as necessary in the medical record.
- Obtains medical records, ensures all required documentation is available in the medical record.
- Obtains vital signs, completes medication reconciliation, patient history, and screening procedures in the medical record.
- Assists provider with special procedures and examinations as defined on competency checklist.
- Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of examination rooms, stocks assigned areas, and ensures par levels of supplies are maintained.
- Prepares exam rooms with necessary instruments.
- Performs simple procedures as directed by the nurse or provider and as defined on the competency checklist.
- Sends patient communication regarding appointments/tests/procedures.
- Maintains current knowledge of diagnosis and procedure codes.
- Prepares laboratory specimens.
- Performs CLIA waived laboratory tests.
- Carries out provider written or per protocol orders.
- Receives and carries out provider verbal orders based on competency checklist.
- Assists providers with special procedures and examinations as defined on competency checklist.
- Administers immunizations per physician orders and as defined on competency checklist.

HIPAA: This position will have access to the following Protected Health Information in order to carry out the duties related to their position at Hays Medical Center based on the following criteria:
Primary – required (routine) to do the job;
Secondary – required for the job, but mostly be exception; and
None – no approved access

Patient Demographic Information (information used to identify a person): Name, Date of Birth, Address, Race, Marital Status, Religion

Clinical Information (information that describes a patient’s health status): Diagnosis, Reports/Medical Notes, Test Results, Problem List, Procedures, History and Physical

Coding Information (clinical information that is in (alpha) numeric format): ICD-9 Codes, Rev Codes, CPT Codes

Financial Information/Insurance (information related to insurance, billing and payment): Billing Information, Payer Name, Payer ID, Account Balances, Plan Elements Covered, Payment Information, Payment Rates
