Job Summary
The Clinical Abstraction Specialist is a skilled professional responsible for supporting our clients to maximize the value of their participation as well as our business unit targets. Primary priorities include: accurately and efficiently mining data from patient electronic medical records in accordance with clinical registry specifications, providing actionable insights and improvement opportunities to client stakeholders, and contributing to the department and company mission.
This individual must maintain professional confidentiality and is responsible for knowing and understanding registry data collection and performance requirements, such as Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS), American College of Cardiology (ACC), American College of Surgeons National Surgery Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP), among other programs.
Data abstraction and process improvement may occur concurrently and retrospectively to evaluate the quality of patient care. This individual will be responsible for adopting abstraction best practices and using their clinical and subject area knowledge and critical thinking skills to produce timely, accurate registry data that can be used for improvement.
What you will own:
The following functions describe the essential duties of this role including but not limited to:
Maintains knowledge of current registry guidelines, measure specifications, data element definitions, and compliance with data outcomes. Uses internal Q&A and external registry resources for clarification interpreting the registry specifications as needed. Completes abstraction assignments using departmental best practices and meeting productivity thresholds. Meets abstraction data quality standards as measured by internal and external audits.Validates and provides insights specific to outliers, failures, opportunities for improvement.Participates in abstraction improvement projects and adopts new workflows and technology to optimize and standardize data collection. Participates in activities to support external audits.Maintains compliance with departmental operational tools, systems, and processes. Interacts with client stakeholders to provide guidance on registry metrics and information specific to what is required to meet and exceed quality thresholds. Acts a subject matter expert (SME) to assist with client questions and to provide education on registry definitions and standards. Monitors and appropriately query clinicians for documentation to support accuracy or clarity in the medical record.Approaches their work with an improvement mindset - continuously striving for excellence including: efficient, accurate and complete abstraction, and proactive communication. Shares learnings and collaborates with other abstraction team members. Aligns all work and resource management with Health Catalyst’s mission, cultural attributes, and operating principles.Additional duties to support client registry performance and goals as needed.Who you are / what you bring:
Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to prioritize.Must work well independently and remotely.Must be adaptable and able to reprioritize work to meet registry deadlines, business unit targets, and client objectives. Ability to understand and operationalize quality improvement philosophy, principles, and technology.Demonstrated ability in communication, creativity, flexibility, and problem-solving.Ability to establish and maintain close partnerships with clients to help them achieve their registry performance goals.Knowledge of or ability to learn Microsoft Office products including but not limited to MS Outlook, Excel, Word. Knowledge of or ability to learn how to navigate Health Catalyst technology, and registry abstraction software.Education & Relevant Experience:
Clinical Data Abstraction experience, including an understanding of data collection and performance requirements for CathPCI and CPMI Registries.Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in a clinical setting.Required License
Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the United States or a combination of a related degree and/or applicable license and clinical experience.Information Security and Compliance Responsibilities:
Maintain compliance with training directives required by the organization pertaining to Information Security, Acceptable Use Policy and HIPAA Privacy and Security. Adhere to and comply with the organizations Acceptable Use Policy.
