Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor
Classification Title: Clinical Assistant Professor College/Division: College of Education Department: CED Teacher Education Advertised Job Summary: The Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina is seeking applications for a Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor for the Elementary Education program, with expertise in literacy, to join our nationally recognized and award-winning faculty. This is a full-time 9-month position. We seek a dynamic educator with an interest in elementary education, language and literacy education, and culturally relevant teaching. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in the Elementary Education program and coordinating district cohorts of the Master of Arts in Teaching ( MAT ) Program. The successful candidate will begin August 16, 2025. The Elementary Education program seeks to uphold our commitment to teaching and scholarship that focuses on preparing teachers to work in diverse classrooms at the intersection of race, languages, language variations, immigration, gender identities, and various abilities. It is expected that the candidate’s areas of expertise include, teaching and teacher preparation, reading and writing; culturally responsive teaching for elementary students, and pedagogical knowledge related to inclusive classroom instruction, classroom management, culturally and linguistically diverse students, and students with special needs. Responsibilities: The successful applicant will join a team of collaborative faculty serving the nationally recognized Elementary Education program and will be expected to (1) teach courses in elementary education and/or literacy education; (2) teach courses in culturally relevant pedagogy; (3) teach additional courses to meet programmatic needs; (4) schedule and coordinate the screening of MAT applicants, and advise enrolled applicants when applicable; and (5) provide service to the department, institution, schools, and profession. The successful applicant will have opportunities to teach at a USC Professional Development School or partnership site; develop and teach courses online, and on campus, and advise students enrolled in the Teaching and Learning PhD programs. Advertised Salary Range: Salary commensurate with qualifications. Advertised Minimum Qualifications : Applicants must have: (1) an earned doctorate in reading, language and literacy education, or in a related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization; (2) expertise in literacy instruction and assessment; (3) two years or the equivalent of teaching experience in elementary school settings; and (4) evidence of effective teaching, preferably with pre- and/or in-service teachers. Preference will be given to applicants who possess (1) experience teaching diverse populations of underserved students; (2) a commitment to field-based pedagogy in teacher education; (3) a commitment to teaching and/or preparing educators to employ culturally responsive approaches to teaching; and/or (4) expertise in teaching with technology and/or distributed learning formats.
