The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University invites applicants for a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor of Haitian Creole language to begin September 1st, 2025, pending administrative and budgetary approval. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $70,000. The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies promotes study, research, and public knowledge of Latin America and the Caribbean through competitive master’s degree programs, nationally recognized language training, and outreach programs to K-12, post-secondary institutions, and the public at large. We practice contemporary critical area studies through a rigorous focus on the region as well as on its diasporic populations in the US, always attentive to the geopolitical histories that have shaped the contours of the region and its diasporas in the first place. Established in 1966, CLACS was the first in New York City, and one of the first in the region, to grant a dedicated, interdisciplinary Master’s degree in Latin American Studies; we now also offer dual and joint degrees in journalism, museum studies, library science, and law. As a US Department of Education-designated Title VI Center (FLAS), our work deepens social and cultural engagement with the region both within and beyond the university, supporting academic research and teaching as well as expanding academic discourse via programming and initiatives related to public policy, education, journalism, culture, and the arts, and all with a particular support for language. With its institutional partners in the Indigenous and Diasporic Languages Consortium (IDLC), CLACS offers Quechua, Mixtec, Nahuatl, and Haitian Creole language courses to Consortium students. This Clinical Assistant Professor appointment is a non-tenure track, 3-year appointment, subject to renewal based upon a positive review and positive recommendation. Subsequent reappointments can be made for up to three years, with the future possibility of promotion to Clinical Associate Professor, and later, to Clinical Professor. Course load: three classes per semester. Candidates should have: + + M.A. minimum. + First-language competency in Haitian Creole and English; + Experience and demonstrated evidence of excellence in Haitian Creole language teaching at all levels (introductory, intermediate, and advanced) according to a competency-driven, communicative approach; + Experience with developing proficiency assessment models, and pedagogical materials; + Solid interpersonal and organizational skills; + Ability to work collaboratively, and the willingness to serve on Center committees. Preferred skills include: + + Curriculum development and program building skills; + Experience with student group engagement; + Training in applied linguistics and in Haitian Creole language pedagogy; + Ability to use technologies applied to language instruction; + Motivation toward community outreach and engagement; + Experience with translation; + Understanding the learning needs of heritage speakers.
