The Outpatient Specialty Dietitian is responsible for assessment, education, and nutrition care plans for patients who have weignt management issues, Type I and II Diabetes, eating disorders, disordered eating, and unhealthy relationships with food, as well as patients referred to the outpatient clinics for other nutritional care needs. The focus of this position is to assess, educate, create patient care plans, and provide Medical Nutrition Therapy to other outpatient clients as assigned. The Specialty Dietician will work in tandem with the medical care team to conduct outpatient counseling services in person and via telehealth to assess and treat the nutritional needs of pediatric patients with specialty needs. The dietitian may provide nutrition and eating disorder information to peers, healthcare workers, students, and the public in a variety of forums such as health fairs, media interviews, lectures, seminars, social media, written articles, to promote nutritional and eating disorder education to the public.

Clinical Duties:

Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of nutrition and counseling practices.Complete individual personalized nutritional assessments and coordinate on-going nutritional care in recoveryProvide nutritional counseling education for clients and/or their familiesParticipate in care coordination and treatment planningAssist in meal planning and preparation for client meetingsLead and facilitate group nutrition classes on assigned topicsCommunicate compassionately, effectively and enthusiastically with clients and/or familiesDevelop and maintain nutrition education materials and clinical procedures up to date with current research and practiceMust be able to demonstrate basic computer skills with a working knowledge of various software programs and electronic medical record chartingCompletes assessments, screens, and follow-ups in a through and comprehensive manner, in accordance with the departmental and professional standards of care, including diet/intake histories, lab values, patient disease knowledge, drug-nutrient interactions and recommendations.Educates patients in a through and effective manner.Communicates and monitors implementation of the nutritional care plan with multidisciplinary team members.Assists with discharge planning on inpatients.Participates in health care team conferences and rounds assigned.Maintains age and disease-specific clinical knowledge and skills.

Dietary Duties:

Assists diet office with menu options if needed, specifically for patients with special diets and food allergies.Communicates with the Dietary staff regarding pertinent patient care, departmental performance and organizational issues as needed.Initiates diet and laboratory orders within scope

Administrative:

Maintains up-to-date patient education materials for the assigned areas. Updates and/or develops education materials as needed.Serves on hospital committees as needed and requested.Actively participates in QAPI projects as requested.Participate in collaboration of care and marketing to area providersUtilize technology effectively and efficiently for scheduling, communications, and record keepingMaintains accurate records and completes documentation in a timely mannerParticipate in social media and web campaigns, advertising, and promotion.

Patient Care and Education:

Using evidence-based weight-inclusive practices, conducts nutrition assessments, interventions, and follow-up in a patient-centered manner for patients referred by area providersCollaborates with a team of providers, dietitians and PsychologistsParticipate in case conferences with interdisciplinary teams for patient care (mental health, primary care, etc)Provide support for diabetes and nutrition group education programs, and in some cases develop, maintain, and conduct group education programsUtilize motivational interviewing (MI) skills to support patients in a patient-centered manner.

Your must haves

Advanced experience with and interest in the treatment of eating disorders, weight management, Endocrine disorders, and multidisciplinary teams. Maintains continuing education hours as outlined by the Commission on Dietetic Registration3 years Clinical dietetics experience preferred. Additional specialty training related to assigned clinical area preferred.Required: Bachelor's Degree Dietetics, nutrition or related field.Registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Licensed through the State of Louisiana Board of Examiners in Dietetics and Nutrition. Specialty certification is required within 3 years of hire.Requires good oral/written communication skillsMust exhibit professionalism, respect therapeutic boundaries, have cultural competency, as well as self-motivation and self-awareness.Experience working on intra-disciplinary team consisting of medical and mental health providers. Inpatient and outpatient dietary management preferred.Availability for cross coverage between units for continuum care preferred.Knowledge of nutrition related labs needed.
