Clinical Engineer III
**Job Type:** Regular **Time Type:** Full time **Work Shift:** Day (United States of America) **FLSA Status:** Exempt **When you join the growing BILH team, you're not just taking a job, you’re making a difference in people’s lives.** The Clinical Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting and advancing patient care by applying engineering and management skills to healthcare technology to the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) and Clinical Engineering Program and participating BILH entities. In charge of technically complex clinical systems or devices and training technical staff on the service support of such systems. Is in charge of mentoring/onboarding junior staff. Provides consultation and technical support for healthcare technology. **Job Description:** Primary Responsibilities: 1. Evaluates and plans for technologies, middleware, systems, and infrastructure required to support medical device integration and interoperability with electronic medical record systems. (essential) 2. Participates and acts as a medical device data integration resource on large multidisciplinary electronic medical record institutional conversion projects. (essential) 3. Ensures the development and maintenance of an operational service model to support medical device integration hardware and infrastructure. (essential) 4. Develops & provides internal staff education on medical device integration technology. Prepares programs and teaches about medical device integration, basic troubleshooting, support, and safety. (essential) 5. Monitors medical device vulnerabilities/hazards/recalls. Reports and ensures appropriate follow-up. Coordinates the internal and external medical device alerts to ensure safe environment for patients, staff and visitors that are part of all Clinical Engineering depts system-wide. (essential) 6. Coordinates security mgmt process including analysis & related documentation associated with systems to prioritize, develop & implement plans to manage identified risks associated by applying appropriate safeguards. Maintains an inventory of systems & reviews the equipment database to ensure it is up to date. (essential) 7. Implements a 5-year capital equipment plan of existing/new operations including a needs analysis/assessment model and an analysis of cost/benefit, total cost of ownership, return on investment, and comparative evaluation of available technologies. Manages the current cycle of equipment prioritization, including preparing equipment replacement reports. Coordinates user requests. (essential) 8. Monitors regulatory developments affecting devices/systems and identifies/coordinates implementation of appropriate compliance measures. (essential) 9. Participates in key standing committees and provides clinical engineering advice/consultation as appropriate. Participates in the after-hours emergency service coverage (On Call) issue escalation and institutional Emergency Mgmt support as required. (essential) 10. Conduct investigations of incidents involving medical technology, analyzes findings and makes recommendations for corrective measures including root cause analysis and failure mode and effect analysis. Works closely with Patient Safety, Risk Mgmt & Legal dept. (essential) Required Qualifications: 1. Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science required. Master’s degree preferred. 2. 5-8 years related work experience required. 3. Demonstrated experience in project management, planning of complex projects, communication and interaction with large IS departments required. 4. Advanced experience in the clinical environment with understanding of the operational structure and typical processes in the hospital setting required. 5. Knowledge of Human Physiology and Anatomy, understanding of engineering principles in the application of clinical devices/technologies and complex medical devices, and extensive knowledge of computer networks and integration of medical equipment required. 6. Advanced technical computer skills as required for technical support specific to functional area and related systems. Preferred Qualifications: 1. Clinical Engineering or Information Systems certification preferred. 2. Understanding of the design and usability of medical device systems and interfaces preferred. 3. Understanding of database programming languages including Microsoft SQL and Access; XML, HTML and VB. Advanced proficiency in personal computer applications including word processors and spreadsheets and technical drawing software including Microsoft Project and Visio preferred. Competencies: 1. Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers. 5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers. 6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations. 7. Team Work: Ability to lead collaborative teams for larger projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have implications for the management and operations of multiple areas of the organization. 8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner. Social/Environmental Requirements: 1. Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work. 2. Work requires constant response to changing circumstances and using new information to adjust approach and to quickly respond to new needs. 3. Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions 4. Health Care Status: HCW 3: Regular provision of service in a patient care area. Physical Requirements: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
