Job Description

We have Temporary Part-Time Clinical Extern positions available in Medicine and Surgical departments. Please apply to explore your next career opportunity with a progressive organization, where our people are at the heart of everything that we do!

The Clinical Extern will be working in the capacity as unregulated health care provider. They may perform pre-identified controlled acts authorized to nursing within the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario delegated to them under the supervision of a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them.

QualificationsNursing Students enrolled in a CNO approved baccalaureate-nursing program who have completed their 2nd, 3rd year or are in their final year of studyDemonstrated evidence of excellent academic standingCurrent certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) requiredCompletion of mandatory/required certifications provided via corporate orientation, including extern orientation, and as defined by unit (e.g., Mask Fit Test, WHIMS, AODA, IPAC)Demonstrated infection prevention and control practicesEffective interpersonal and communication skillsSuccessful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred

Core competencies:

Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of managers and nursing professionals on the unit and in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards, while taking into account CNO’s guidance for working with unregulated care providersWorks with nurses to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actionsProvides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as per the hospital policyProvides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuriesAssists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazardsRequests assistance with assigned duties whenever neededDemonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skillsDemonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skillsParticipates as a team member

Additional Information

Hours: Currently, Days/Evenings/Nights, 8- and 12-hour shifts, including weekends and statutory holidays (Subject to change in accordance with operational requirements). Minimum 15 to 24 hours per pay period (0.15 to 0.3 FT) to a maximum of full‐time hours (75 hours per pay period).
