Clinical Informaticist Parttm

The Clinical Informaticist is a medical professional that is trained in computer data analysis and also has specialized training in evidence based medicine and medical treatments. Informatics is the specialty that integrates clinical science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in provider practice. Informatics facilitates the integration of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom to support patients and providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

Demonstrate knowledge of healthcare computer systems, equipment, and applications Demonstrate knowledge of healthcare technological trends and developments Incorporate theories, principles, and concepts from appropriate sciences into informatics practice - examples include: information, systems, and change theories; principles and concepts include: project management, implementation methods, workflow analysis, process redesign, organizational culture, and database structures Integrate ergonomics and human-computer interaction principles into informatics solution design, development, selection, implementation, and evaluation Systematically determine social, legal, regulatory, and ethical impact of an informatics solution on clinical practice and health care Facilitate the creation of nursing and physician knowledge Act as a Project Manager, Consultant, Educator, Researcher, Product Developer, Decision Support/Outcomes Facilitator, Advocate, Policy Developer Participate in the process of designing, developing, and marketing quality informatics solutions for clinicians and providers Provide ongoing coordination, review, and analysis of the quality of the clinical documentation system and coordinates informatics orientation and training for clinical service computer users Support both clinical and non-clinical areas of practice as necessary Execute on processes in a fast pace, cutting edge environment Manage and support appropriate and assigned aspects of system implementation and rollout Communicate technical issues and processes clearly to audiences with varying levels of understanding Interact with business area users for the purpose of planning, coordination and data gathering Identify project and application dependencies and risks Develop mitigation and contingency plans Manage the change control process Manage multiple priorities against numerous deadlines Work independently and within a team environment Assist in development of user documentation and training programs Prepare and present progress reports and project scorecards Implement, maintain, and evaluate clinical documentation systems utilized Analyze, develop, and evaluate processes for information flow Remain knowledgeable of clinical documentation systems to determine procedural issues versus system/application deficiencies Analyze current patient care and clinical management systems Assist staff with efficient use of information systems Obtain staff feedback about system deficiencies and suggestions for improvement and enhanced functionality; submit appropriate suggestions to vendors for potential enhancements/improvements Coordinate with nursing educators in the development of education/ongoing programs for staff Teach the computer component of new employee education Review and revise training materials as needed Conduct orientation/training on information systems utilizing appropriate methods to physicians, caregivers, and non-clinicians alike Provide prompt consultation, either by phone or in person, regarding troubleshooting or system inquiries Monitor and evaluate activities related to the information system which impact the quality of patient care. Develops follow-up education if needed. Implement and modify processes and tools to assist clinicians with the management of the documentation of patient care Assist staff with clinical documentation questions and/or issues Formulate and revise policies and procedures governing nursing use of clinical information systems, implementation, and evaluation Assist or help coordinate collation of administrative reports as requested Promote awareness of the importance of data validity and security Contribute to assure established departmental objectives are accomplished Meet productivity expectations and/or quarterly improvement expectations Prioritize and organize work in such a manner as to achieve maximum efficiency and high level of productivity

Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: Successful completion of a Registered Nursing Program

Preferred Education: Associates Degree in Information Systems Management, Computer Science, Healthcare Administration, or related field

Experience: 2+ years’ experience working with computerized patient care and patient management systems

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Applicant must be licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
