The Clinical Laboratory Scientist Lead performs clinical laboratory testing of blood and body fluid constituents as requested by physicians. Evaluates and reports data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Serves as an authority on test procedures in the laboratory. Assists in training and maintenance of staff competencies.

Job Description

This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this department. GENERAL DUTIES

​Ensures/provides quality specimens for laboratory testing:

Uses proper container, technique correctly applies labels to containers when accessioning.Accessions specimens and evaluates the specimen appropriateness.Processes samples to preserve sample integrity, correct centrifuge times, proper preservatives, appropriate aliquots/sample sharing. Processes histology samples if working in the histology section of the laboratory.Transports samples to correct locations and stores samples under appropriate conditions, pre and post testing.

Operates systems/methodologies in order to produce data for patients, QC and proficiency testing:

Performs daily bench QA checks within limits.Performs quality checks and QS reagents calibrations/standardizations.Safeguards samples identification and ensures samples are labeled according to SOPP with accurate manual input of patient demographics.

Reports clinical data so that care givers receive timely patient information:

Evaluates data before releasing as a result to care givers. Considers sample integrity, system operation and patient history.Uses computer skills to evaluate data, document actions and control workflow. Uses computer QA monitors (delta checks, previous results).

Maintains systems to ensure maximum up-times:

Performs weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual maintenance. Reviews QC statistics for system problems. Performs troubleshooting as needed.Uses supplies tools and equipment efficiently to minimize department expenses.Manages supply inventory, properly receives and stores supplies.

Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory standards in order to satisfy compliance requirements:

Follows site specific SOPPs, manuals and instructions.Follows regulatory agency guidelines (CAP, JCAHO, Medicare, OSHA, state, FDA, AABB).

Overviews daily operations of department/section for optimum operation:

Serves as point of contact to medical staff and nursing, regulatory/compliance agencies, HIS/LIS departments, etc.Provides technical guidance to technicians/technologists when problems occur. Monitors the effectiveness of the action with QA monitors, reports to staff and management on the results.Ensures quality, maintaining current procedures and evaluates/implements new procedures. Trains staff and helps maintain competencies.Works with laboratory leadership to oversee the departments quality/performance improvement programs, monitoring and tracking trends and implementing corrective action as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Clinical Lab Generalist licensed by Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners as CLG or CLS

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of acceptable medical laboratory testing theory and techniques.Knowledge of laboratory standards set forth by CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, CMS, OSHA, AABB and CLSI.When execute duties ability to perform a wide range of routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures and analyses and ability to interpret patient test results.Must be able to work weekends and holidays.Familiar with computer, computerized equipment, organization and team skills.Leadership abilities, problem solving/troubleshooting abilities and critical thinking skills to support quality decision making.Ability to provide guidance on analytical issues and regulatory requirements.
