The Pathology Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Assistant 2.
CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant 2 performs a variety of routine duties in assisting technical and professional personnel in clinical and research laboratories. An employee in this position provides broad support for the laboratory operations.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Identifies, handles, and accessions patient samples requiring laboratory testing.
2. Transports specimens and communicates test results timely and accurately.
3. Maintains required laboratory files and logs system in a neat and accurate manner.
4. Performs specimen processing, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.
5. Maintains adequate inventory level as per protocol.
6. Participates in the performance improvement processes for the department.
7. Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition.
8. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regula-tions.
9. Generates patient reports and forwarding them to the proper departments/physicians.
10. Investigates and responds to all inquiries or problems related to referral testing; Answers all inquiries made by the Reference Lab and resolves problem associated with improper or inadequate samples. Answers all inquiries made by physicians or patient unit personnel related to specimen requirements.
11. Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol and rotates previous stock when it applies
12. Checks packing slips, verifies number of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee.
13. Serves as a lead/Back-up when Supervisor is unavailable.
14. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Department Specific Functions
1. Register internal and external patient consult cases (primary reads, second opinions) in One-Click/UChart, including personal cases sent for second opinions.
2. Perform grossing for internal, external, and personal consult cases.
3. Communicate with outside facilities to resolve missing information, documentation, and discrepancies on requisitions.
4. Obtain payment information and process payments for self-pay and international consult cases.
5. Maintain documentation of all processed and received payments.
6. Place orders in CoPath for recuts of patient material when only a block is received for consultation.
7. One-Click all Histology, Cytology, Core Lab, and UMMG Clinic requisitions.
8. Process technical work-only cases.
9. Prepare patient cases for testing and analysis.
10. Evaluate collected data to confirm accuracy.
11. Upload original patient material to CoPath and UChart.
12. Review all patient and clinician requests to ensure necessary documentation is received.
13. Manage designated folders in the Pathology Main Inbox.
14. Receive, sort, and track international and external cases received by FedEx and other carriers.
15. Return patient materials (slides, blocks) to originating facilities promptly.
16. Assist patients, clients, and visitors.
17. Maintain a pending list of problem cases.
18. Answer multiple incoming lines and triage questions from outside facilities and clinicians.
19. Assist customers with requested information and resolve pathologist-related issues.
20. Maintain a log of client specimens sent for additional testing, tumor boards, second opinions, and research.
