Founded in 1906, McLeod Health is a locally owned and managed, not for profit organization supported by the strength of more than 900 members on its medical staff and more than 2,900 licensed nurses. McLeod Health is also composed of approximately 15,000 team members and more than 90 physician practices throughout its 18-county service area. With seven hospitals, McLeod Health operates three Health and Fitness Centers, a Sports Medicine and Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, Hospice and Home Health Services. The system currently has 988 licensed beds, including Hospice and Behavioral Health. The Clinical Laboratory Extern works under the supervision of laboratory staff and has knowledge of procedures learned during their practical applications. This includes conducting analysis of specimens and results to verify accuracy.
Collect, prepare, store and/or transport specimens using correct techniques, anticoagulants and protocols while being responsive to the patient/customer waiting. Collect, process, and maintain patient identification and testing integrity throughout the preanalytical, analytical, and post analytical processes. Organize and perform analysis of specimens to include quality control. Under direct supervision, learn to correlate principles and theory to application, recognize problems, solve problems and evaluate validity of results obtained. Effectively use LIS. Perform routine and pre-routine maintenance. Follow all safety procedures and protocols established by the clinical site and governing agencies. Receive incoming phone calls, document incoming requests and provide follow through. Assist in maintaining supplies. Other duties as assigned.
