Clinical Nurse Educator - Nursing Administration - Full Time

Position Summary:
The Clinical Nurse Educator is a professional nurse who, as a result of graduate nursing education and clinical practice expertise, possesses knowledge and skill to assume responsibility for clinical practice in a defined and specialized patient population. Their clinical expertise enables them to provide advanced practice care to patients and positively affect the delivery of care in their area of specialty by developing evidence based standards of care and bringing them into the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of critical, urgent and emergent patient care within the Emergency Department. The Clinical Nurse Educator utilizes and applies change theory in matters related to clinical practice; applies interpersonal skills and fosters communication when interacting with staff, patients, and other members of the healthcare organization. The Clinical Nurse Educator works collaboratively with the Nursing Division Leadership to assure that standards of clinical practice are met. The Clinical Nurse Educator assists with assessing the needs and acuity of the Emergency Department patient population ensuring that the appropriate level of care is provided and may offer his/her assistance.
Education, License & Cert:
A master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of a BSN from an accredited program required. Certified Emergency Nurse preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of four years’ experience in a like Emergency Department/Trauma Center and demonstrated capability and competence in clinical nursing practice, teaching, and leadership.
Essential Functions:
A. Clinical Practice
1. Provides direct and/or indirect care based on identified patient, staff, family, or unit needs.
2. Participates in establishing standards of care in area of expertise and in evaluating nursing care against these standards utilizing conceptual frameworks and theory as a basis for clinical practice. Collaborates / consults with other health professionals in planning the nursing practice.
3. Maintains clinical skills and expertise related to advanced ED clinical practice and staff development, while acting as a role model / mentor to ED staff.
4. Advances professional nursing through research, publication, organizations, and other activities.
B. Education/Staff Development
1. Collaborates with nursing staff, nurse manager / director and nurse educators to identify, plan, implement, and evaluate staff educational needs and criteria in order to promote high quality nursing care for the ED patient / family.
2. Assesses and maintains records of ED staff competencies and continuing education ensuring that all staff have met requirements. Informs the nurse manager / director of any non‐compliances with requirements.
3. Mentors, coaches and educates at the bedside and develops classroom and written educational tools as needed.
4. Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates patient and / or family education programs. Assists nursing staff with patient education through role modeling and serving as a resource person to discuss educational plans and techniques.
5. Collaborates with the DNER in oversight of the orientation process for all new ED staff and their preceptors.
C. Administration
1. Implements and supports the Nursing Department philosophy and objectives. Collaborates and consults with nursing administration and management in the development and interpretation of policies, procedures, and other matters which influence nursing practice and quality aspects of patient care.
2. Participates in performance improvement activities and research as needed for ED.
3. Participates in the ED council meetings ‐ attending 80% or more of the meetings held. Collaborates with DNER educator to assure that one of them is present at sub‐ councils (practice, interdisciplinary, quality and research and professional people).
4. Encourages development of leadership skills and strong team relationships in members of the nursing staff.
5. Provides clinical expertise for administrative decision making while utilizing principles of change theory to effect smooth processes of change. Also, based on clinical expertise, identifies technological advances in ED nursing and makes appropriate recommendations to the nurse manager / director and other committees.
6. Participates in interview process of applicants in collaboration with the nurse manager/director. Is actively involved in nurse recruitment and retention.
7. Remains informed of current nursing practice advancements and research findings and provides for dissemination of research developments.
8. Helps bring evidence‐based practice to the bedside of all ED patients (critical, emergent, urgent, and non‐urgent patient populations.
Other Duties:
1. The Clinical Nurse Educator must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age/population of the patients served in his / her unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements as to his/her age‐specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the appropriate policies and procedures.
