CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST - MEDICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT - 36 HOURS - DAY SHIFT Sign On Bonus $20,000 Full Time Benefit Eligible Shift: Days, Four 10 hour shifts, Monday through Friday GENERAL SUMMARY: Unit Description: The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is a 68-bed unit divided into six pods covering two floors. The MICU sees a wide range of critically ill, medical-based patients. Admitting diagnosis can include pulmonary-related issues, acute and chronic renal disorders, liver failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, sepsis, blood infections and diseases, and cancer-related issues. As a primary referral center, care is provided to some of the sickest patients in not just the region, but statewide. Each MICU pod has its own personality and culture, but all are highly collaborative with physicians and other members of the care team. In addition to flexible scheduling, the MICU offers many opportunities for growth. For example, this unit started the Southeast Michigan chapter of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). Many nurses progress to obtain advanced practice certification, pursue leadership positions or become informal unit leaders. Role Description: Our MICU has two Clinical Nurse Specialists within the unit. We each oversee the clinical leadership of three pods each, in partnership with our Nurse Managers, Assistant Nurse Managers, Nurse Educators, and Charge Nurse. We are the clinical subject matter experts on the unit with responsibilities to the unit and the house including quality and safety rounding, patient progression rounding, aligning new orientees and preceptors, co-chairing various committees, and implementing key quality and safety initiatives. + Under general supervision of the Nursing Administrator(s)/Leadership, provides leadership and clinical expertise within the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) spheres of influence to improve patient care, advance nursing practice and impact the health care delivery system. + Functions as a leadership team member as a partner with the Nurse Manager/Director to assure competence, practice standards, orientation and education. + The CNS serves as a clinical expert providing teaching, mentoring, consulting, research, management and systems improvement in a specific practice area or with a patient population. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: + Master's Degree in Nursing required. + Current Michigan Clinical Nurse Specialist certification and license required. + Three (3) to five (5) years of progressively more responsible experiences as a registered nurse in a clinical setting with expertise substantiated through education, experience and credentials required. + Evidence of expertise in clinical knowledge, skill and judgment directly linked to specialty area of expertise. + Three (3) or more years of prior nursing experience in a MICU setting is preferred. CERTIFICATION/LICENSE REQUIRED: + Current Michigan Registered Nurse license required. + Candidates not possessing current CNS certification & licensure hired as Nurse Practice Specialist (F01677), until CNS certification and licensure obtained (within 90 days of hire).
