Summary:

The Clinical Pharmacy Manager is responsible for overseeing clinical pharmacy operations in an inpatient hospital setting. This role involves managing the clinical pharmacy team, developing and implementing clinical programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting optimal medication therapy outcomes. The Clinical Pharmacy Manager will collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient use of medications, contributing to high-quality patient care.

Working closely with the Director of Pharmacy, the Clinical Pharmacy Manager will develop, monitor, and enhance the Clinical Pharmacy Program, ensuring compliance with relevant standards. The role includes evaluating program effectiveness and coordinating activities that support clinical pharmacy functions. Key responsibilities involve managing clinical pharmacy team, managing medication usage to ensure cost-effectiveness, formulary compliance, and ongoing assessments. The Clinical Pharmacy Manager will also monitor utilization trends and stay current with the latest literature, guidelines, and best practices to ensure the adoption of effective therapies.

Reporting directly to the Director of Pharmacy, the Clinical Pharmacy Manager will collaborate with the pharmacy team and engage with providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals through committees, workgroups, and individual interactions. In demonstrating professional leadership, the Clinical Pharmacy Manager will facilitate communication to support the comprehensive review, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of hospital clinical initiatives.

Qualifications/Credentials/Education:

Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD.) degree from an accredited institution.Licensed pharmacist with active state licensure.Board certification in pharmacotherapy or other relevant specialty (required)Completion of ASHP accredited PGY-1 pharmacy practice (preferred) Minimum of 3-5 years of pharmacy leadership experience in a healthcare setting. Strong clinical knowledge and expertise in pharmacy practice standards.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

 

Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership and Program Development:

Lead the clinical pharmacy team, providing guidance, training, and mentorship to clinical pharmacists and others.Develop, implement, and maintain clinical pharmacy programs, ensuring they meet the needs of the hospital’s patient population.Establish protocols and guidelines for medication management, including formulary management, antimicrobial stewardship, medication reconciliation programs, and more.Actively participate in hospital committees, including but not limited to infection control, quality improvement, and lead pharmacy and therapeutics with a focus on clinical advancement and improving patient outcomes. Foster collaboration with other departments such as nursing, medicine, and quality improvement to enhance interdisciplinary care and ensure safe and effective medication use throughout the hospital.

Patient Care & Medication Management:

Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to develop and review patient care plans.Ensure that all medication therapy is safe, effective, and tailored to individual patient needs, including adjusting therapy based on lab results, drug interactions, and patient-specific factors.Participate in multidisciplinary teams and serve as a clinical resource to the healthcare team.Write, develop, and review as necessary evidence-based protocols and guidelines that address the hospital’s current needs, ensuring alignment with national standards and promoting best practices in medication management.

Quality & Compliance:

Ensure compliance with all hospital, state, and federal regulations related to medication use and pharmacy practice.Monitor medication therapy outcomes, adverse drug reactions, and medication errors, implementing strategies to minimize risk.Develop initiatives for continuous quality improvement within the clinical pharmacy services.

Education & Training:

Provide education and training to pharmacy staff, medical staff, and nursing on clinical pharmacy topics, medication safety, and best practices in medication management.Serve as a preceptor/resource for pharmacy residents and students.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Assist with the management of pharmacy operations, including staffing, formulary suggestions, and resource allocation while mitigating drug shortages.Hold responsibility for the supervision, performance management and professional development of inpatient pharmacy staff, ensuring all team members meet operational and clinical goals. Collaborate with the Director of Pharmacy to develop and implement strategic plans for pharmacy services.Contribute to formulary management, ensuring the cost-effective use of medications while maintaining high standards of patient care.
