Indiana University Health Adult Academic Health Center (IUH AAHC), Department of Pharmacy is recruiting a clinical pharmacy specialist to care for critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Units and Emergency Department at Methodist Hospital. The Nocturnist clinical pharmacy team functions as a house-wide clinical specialist overnight with a focus on the highest acuity patients in the Emergency Department (ED) and Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The role was started in 2016 and consists of a four-pharmacist team that is part of a team of 30 clinical specialists based out of the Methodist Hospital campus. The successful candidate is highly motivated, resourceful, and has outstanding leadership and communication skills. Team members in this position work 7 evenings per 14-day period in a direct patient care role.
Methodist Hospital is a designated Level 1 Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Neuroscience Center of Excellence with over 130 licensed ICU beds. The emergency department sees over 100,000 annual patient visits, and the adult intensive care units at Methodist include cardiac medical, cardiac surgical, medical, neurosurgical, and trauma. Pharmacists are an integral aspect of patient care at IU Health, with a strong presence and excellent relationships with physicians and nursing partners across all specialties. This pharmacist specialist will be responsible for providing and coordinating medication management in the evening and will add to the critical care pharmacist team which also includes day shift and evening ICU clinical pharmacy specialists as well as all operations pharmacists. The ideal candidate has experience providing pharmacist services in the dynamic and challenging environment of critical care and emergency medicine.
Services provided by pharmacists in this position include:
Attend and participate in medical emergencies, including medical alerts (code blue), stroke 1, trauma 1, vascular 1, STEMI alerts, ECMO cannulations, and rapid responses Address dosing consults (including antibiotic, direct thrombin inhibitors, etc.), including dose adjustments and documentation. Providing clinical pharmacy services in a variety of ICU settings and the Emergency Department Participate in departmental and interdisciplinary committees Identifying opportunities for growth in IU Health pharmacy services Providing leadership for implementation of drug policy guidelines and protocols Active involvement in developing strategies to continuously improve the quality and provision of pharmacy services Ensuring compliance with quality and regulatory standards Precept PGY1 and PGY2 critical care residents and student pharmacists Work closely with overnight operations pharmacists to facilitate cohesive patient care Provide pharmacy specific education to any applicable disciplines overnight as needed
Requirements:
The qualified applicant will possess:
Doctor of Pharmacy or registered pharmacist license Required: PGY1 Residency and PGY2 Residency in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine or equivalent practice experience Preferred: Board Certification (BCPS, BCCCP, and/or BCEMP)
