Clinical Research Registered Nurse Coordinator

PRIMARY FUNCTION/GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION

Coord Clinical Research is a competent clinician who utilizes the nursing process and current clinical knowledge to provide professional nursing care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patient’s physical, learning and psychosocial care. Coordinates clinical drug and device study protocols using diverse clinical assessment and administrative skills and knowledge, to ensure that the appropriate data is compiled and reported, protocol and regulatory requirements are met, and study participants follow correct steps. Performs highly interactive liaisons with sponsor companies, staff personnel, physicians and study patients. Conducts study protocols in accordance with sponsor requirements, FDA, state regulations and BSMH policies and procedures. Provides appropriate clinical assessment of study patient to provide quality care throughout the study and follow up period. Confidentiality and accuracy of all study records will be ensured. Special assignments as required by physicians will be completed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Reviews candidate protocols for feasibility and appropriateness. Performs all phases of study execution including pre-study initiation, start up, implementation and closeoutMaintains a master list of all candidates, active follow up and survival protocol patientsDevelops and maintains systems for data retrieval, submission, summary and analysis for in-house protocolsMaintains a system for retrieving sample data for audits by regulatory and other oversight bodiesMaintains, organizes and archives protocol chartsInterfaces with other disciplines to facilitate accurate and timely data submissionContacts patients and works collaboratively in a team environment to verify patient protocol compliance related to follow-up tests/exams as required by the protocolEnsures, in collaborative with physicians, that eligible patients are enrolled and that informed consent, pretreatment evaluation and preparation of candidate patients is completed and properly documented.  Updates status at completionDemonstrates ability to interact and communicate with all levels of staff, physicians, patients and families in an effective manner, exhibiting tact, enthusiasm, kindness and patienceMaintain accurate and up-to-date knowledge of various studies and participation requirementsAnalyzes and formulates an appropriate plan of action, including age related criteria as it relates to the clinical studyUtilizes clinical experience and physical skills to delineate and define the physiological status of the patient. In addition, utilizes the skills to assess the    educational, psychological and spiritual needs of the patient/significant other/familyInstructs the patient and or significant other regarding treatments, surgical procedures, nursing plans, interventions and tests to allay apprehension and elicit cooperation. Explains and demonstrates home care methods and techniques necessary for continuing patient care and rehabilitationModels professional practice.a. Clarifies and carries out physicians orders in a timely manner.b. Initiates and follows through with problem solving strategies that lead to resolution of patient care issuesModels professional behavior to all personnelManages and updates the research participant’s calendar and schedulingMonitors the charges for research participants to ensure compliant medical billing and coding

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills and proficiency in applying principal, concepts and techniques which are central to the research process.Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.Proficient in use of Windows based MSOffice (Word and Excel). Familiar with the use of   standard office equipment.Comprehensive understanding of medical terminology.Experience in use of clinical trial protocols preferred.Demonstrates ability to coordinate and prioritize diverse tasks.Ability to interpret data, adapt and apply guidelines of research principals.Three years clinical or related experience preferred.Must possess the knowledge of clinical, psychosocial and path/physiological theories related to nursing diagnosis and treatment and can competently perform the range of nursing techniques found in general nursing practice as normally acquired through completion of an accredited nursing program.Maintains CPR certification.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION

BLS Basic Life Support - American Heart Association (preferred)Valid nursing license from the state of practice (required)

EDUCATION

Associate of Nursing, nursing (required)
OR Bachelors Degree in a Healthcare related field (preferred)Masters Degree in a Healthcare related field (preferred)
