Reporting to the Manager of Platform Engineering, the incumbent will help lead the deployment of containerized Kubernetes applications in the Microsoft Azure Cloud as well on-premise data centres as part of Telesat’s Lightspeed program.
In this critical role, the incumbent will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining robust and scalable infrastructure solutions for our Kubernetes-based containerized applications, leveraging both Microsoft Azure cloud and on-premises data centers. You will play a key role in driving innovation and ensuring the high availability and performance of our critical systems.
The candidate MUST be able to attain or have Canadian Controlled Goods Clearance (CGP). This position is located in the Ottawa-Gatineau Region only.
Main ResponsibilitiesManage and convert technical and business requirements into an overall architecture and design specificationEvaluate and make decisions on cloud-native tools, platforms and standards.Document and disseminate best practices around cloud and Kubernetes design, build and supportOffer guidance to other teams on the use, use cases and adoption of cloud technologies.Design, document and provide guidance on various tools, DevOps toolchains, and integrations of software packages within the CloudDesign and implement infrastructure solutions for Kubernetes clusters on both Azure and on-premises environments, ensuring high availability, scalability, and performanceDevelop and maintain infrastructure-as-code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or PuppetCollaborate with development teams to understand application requirements and translate them into robust and scalable infrastructure designsTroubleshoot and resolve infrastructure-related issues, ensuring timely resolution of critical incidents.Stay abreast of the latest advancements in cloud computing, containerization technologies, and security best practicesParticipate in capacity planning and performance tuning activitiesContribute to the development and maintenance of internal infrastructure standards and best practices
Education & Experience RequiredBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience5+ years of experience in designing and implementing infrastructure solutions for enterprise applicationsStrong experience with Kubernetes, including cluster administration, networking, and securityProven experience with cloud computing platforms, particularly Microsoft AzureExperience with infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or PuppetStrong understanding of networking concepts, including VPCs, subnets, routing, and load balancingExperience with container orchestration platforms and container registries (e.g., Docker, Azure Container Registry)Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana Loki)Strong scripting and automation skills (e.g., Python, Bash)Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skillsStrong understanding of security best practices for cloud and on-premises environmentsExperience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices is a plusExperience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM) is a plusCertifications in relevant technologies (e.g., Azure, Kubernetes) are a plus
Decision Making & SupervisionWork under minimal supervision.Help lead, inspire and mentor cloud engineers, DBAs and network engineersProvide guidance on infrastructure best practicesActively participate in the evaluation and selection of new technologies and toolsMake decisions and recommendations requiring analysis and interpretation within established procedures and various governance and compliance frameworks.Final design authority for all Cloud designs and tooling within the Cloud environment
Working ConditionsAble to work in the Telesat Ottawa office environment 5 days per weekNo additional travel anticipated.
