The Clinical Sciences Imaging Biomarkers group at Biogen aims to discover, develop, implement, and interpret biomedical imaging studies in support of decision-making for clinical trials within neurology and neuropsychiatric therapeutic areas. Modern biomedical imaging delivers rich data sets from which hypotheses may be generated or tested to better understand potential drug effects and guide future clinical trial protocols.
The team is seeking a motivated co-op to assist in one or more projects related to image data analysis leveraging existing clinical trial data and/or research on novel image analysis tools for potential use in future clinical trials.
QualificationsWe are seeking a highly motivated co-op to complete a discovery-based project focused on the development of next generation neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disease image biomarkers. This could include working with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), structural MRI, and/or positron emission tomography (PET) data.
As a co-op, you may:
Navigate image databasesCollate and document image analyses performed across clinical trialsDevelop hypotheses and shape a data analysis planPerform exploratory data processing and analysis based on your expertisePlot image analysis resultsInterpret results in reference to trial objectives and relevant academic literaturePerform literature reviews, interpret data, and make scientific recommendationsPrepare and present results within Biogen to different stakeholdersDevelop abstracts or other publications for external audiencesYou will be required to interact effectively and efficiently within the cross-functional environment at Biogen as well as external research teams. You will work independently and, also collaboratively, with other team members in the Biomarkers group.
Qualifications
To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Legal authorization to work in the U.S.At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start dateBe currently enrolled in an accredited college or universityRequired skills
Experience with medical image analysis or image processing using freesurfer or other related software tools (coursework-related experience is acceptable for undergraduate applicants)Experience with scientific computing/programming via Shell scripting, python, MATLAB/octave, C/C++, R, or related languagesUndergraduate and master's-level applicants must have completed coursework in upper-level mathematics, computer programming, statistics, biology, and/or physiologyProficiency in Microsoft Office suiteComfortable working independentlyWell-organized with excellent attention to detailStrong written and verbal communication skillsPreferred skills
Familiarity with common medical image analysis software and tools is a plus: FreeSurfer, SPM, AFNI, FSL, or related software/toolsExperience with PET kinetic modelling software such as PMOD, MIAKAT, AMIDE or othersData visualization experienceHands-on MRI and/or PET imaging data collectionKnowledge of therapeutic areas in neurology or neuropsychiatryEducation
The ideal candidate will be a PhD-student in Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Neurobiology, Neuropsychology, or related fields, with experience in MRI or PET imaging or image data analysis. Students pursuing a master’s degree or undergraduates are also welcomed to apply and will be considered.
