Coder II | HIM | Day
Overview Full Time Position Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm Under minimal technical or managerial supervision, this position assigns codes to diagnoses and procedures using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 for observation, ambulatory surgeries, outpatient procedures, outpatient clinics, and emergency room encounters. A Coder II will also research medical necessity needs if necessary and have good working knowledge of Medicare Local Review Medical Policies (LMRPs). In addition, a Coder II may be assigned responsibility for inpatient records assigning diagnoses and procedures codes using ICD-9-CM for inpatient discharges for the purpose of reimbursement, research and in compliance with federal and hospital regulations. Qualifications Required Education: High School Diploma or GED Preferred Education: Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management/Medical Record Administration. Equivalent healthcare college degree may also be considered. College level courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy, and Physiology. Necessary Skills: 1. PC knowledge 2. Good written and oral communication and customer service skills 3. Must be detail oriented, organized and flexible 4. Able to demonstrate initiative and perform minimum productivity levels. 5. Must have thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology and able to accept direction with changing priorities. Preferred Licensure/Certifications: CCS or CICS or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) or RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator). Certification in other healthcare field in lieu of RHIT and/or RHIA permitted with appropriate coding experience. Required Experience: 1-2 years - Acute care coding experience. Preferred Experience: Three to five (3-5) years coding experience in a large acute care teaching facility.
