The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Branch is one of the state’s largest employers with over 46,000 employees, 11 secretariats, and 70 agencies. The Investigations Center of Expertise (COE) is part of the legal unit of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources Division and is comprised of investigators who investigate most HR-related complaints under Commonwealth policies across Executive Branch departments. These policies include discrimination, sexual harassment, workplace violence, domestic violence/sexual assault/stalking, and retaliation.
The COE operates as an unbiased, internal investigations unit. COE Investigators conduct thorough, impartial investigations in a timely manner to assist in maintaining a safe and productive workplace. The skills acquired through this internship will translate to outside investigative work as well as legal work in the employment and labor law sector and beyond.
Position: Summer Intern
The COE is hiring interns to work as part of the investigations unit from June 1 to August 15, 2025. COE Summer Interns will join the 12-member COE team. Responsibilities include:
Monitoring complaint filings and performing intake on incoming complaints.Assisting investigators with all aspects of workplace investigations, including interviewing and gathering evidence. Writing interview summaries and investigative reports.Communicating with Agency Human Resource Business Partners.Working in a team environment.Attending team meetings and engaging in group discussions.Handling confidential information.Assisting the Director with tasks or research related to the unit, as necessary.
Summer interns will gain hands-on experience in each stage of the investigation process. This position may be of particular interest to those interested in pursuing a career in labor and employment law or government work. Please note that our unit works a hybrid schedule (remote and in-person).
Summer internships are unpaid; however, candidates are welcome to pursue course credit or apply for a grant for government work.
