**Collections Cataloging Assistant II** **Application Deadline:** 26 February 2025 **Department:** Collections **Employment Type:** Full Time **Location:** Library Services Center **Reporting To:** Jose Oliveras **Compensation:** $43,291 / year **Description** **Overview** BookOps is the shared library services collaboration of New York Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library. BookOps coordinates the selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing and distribution of library materials for the member libraries. Cataloging is responsible for providing bibliographic data and classification to make resources discoverable in the collections of NYPL and BPL. Reporting to a Supervising Librarian, the Collections Cataloging Assistant II performs copy cataloging using the OCLC Connexion bibliographic utility and the ILS (Sierra) cataloging module. The materials that are entered into the database include resources in the Research and Branch collections of the New York Public Library and the circulating collection of the Brooklyn Public Library. **Responsibilities:** + Performs online searches to identify new titles versus duplicates for incoming print/non-print materials in English and world languages as appropriate. + Verifies that the correct material has been received for cataloging and physical processing. + Performs copy-cataloging, using OCLC Connexion and other related bibliographic tools to prepare MARC records for loading to the Sierra client and ILS. + Identifies and distinguishes among full MARC, brief acquisition, and vendor-supplied records to provide accurate and consistent bibliographic descriptive data for BookOps member libraries. + Consults with BookOps librarians to resolve discrepancies in bibliographic data and classification produced by Cataloging, Selection, and Acquisitions teams before sending material to physical processing units. + Assists physically in organizing and storing world language materials in the Cataloging Department. **Required Education, Experience & Skills** **Required Education & Certifications** + High School diploma or High School equivalency required **Required Experience** + Entry level position **Required Skills** + **Reading knowledge** of at least one of the romance languages, preferably **French, Italian & Portuguese, or Bengali** . + Familiarity with common office productivity software (Microsoft Office, G Suite) + Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills + Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in organizing and handling detailed work processes + Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently **Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities** + N/A **More...** **Core Values** _All team members are expected and encouraged to embody the NYPL Core Values:_ + Be **Helpful** to patrons and colleagues + Be **Resourceful** in solving problems + Be **Curious** in all aspects of your work + Be **Welcoming** and **Inclusive** **Work Environment** + Office Environment **Physical Duties** + Limited physical effort is required including light lifting/moving + Moving of book trucks **Pre-Placement** **Physical Required?** No **Union/Non Union** Local 1930 **FLSA Status** Non-Exempt **Schedule** + 9am - 5pm + 35 hrs per week _This job description represents the types and levels of responsibilities that will be required of the position and shall not be construed as a declaration of all of the specific duties and responsibilities for the role.
