**The Department of Natural Sciences at Baruch College offers courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental sciences.** **Reporting to the Chair of the Natural Sciences Department, Deputy chair of Biology and Chief College Laboratory Technician, the College Laboratory Technicians (CLT) will provide technical support for undergraduate courses and for research by designated faculty where appropriate. The Chairperson or Chief CLT will determine what materials, equipment, supplies, etc. will be allocated and assigned to support courses, sections and faculty research; will designate appropriate protocols to be followed; and will assign projects. Weekday hours may include early mornings or evenings.**
**Principal responsibilities during the academic year and summer sessions will include:**
**1.** **Prepare all reagents, buffers, solutions, media, cultures, slides, stains and similar materials required for assigned courses, and ensure that these and all required reagents and equipment needed for appropriate courses are available in a timely appropriate fashion and in sufficient quality and quantity.**
**2.** **Test and troubleshoot all new exercises and experiments before they are used in courses to ensure that all reagents, equipment, etc., are satisfactory and of good quality.**
**3.** **When a class is over, dispose of, in appropriate fashion, all waste materials and solutions to satellite storage area; replenish materials and solutions for the next class and make sure that equipment is working.**
**4.** **Remove and store in good condition and in an appropriate fashion all reagents, glassware, supplies, stocks, and any other materials used in lecture and/or laboratory exercises and classes as compatible with their safe use and proper storage procedures.**
**5.** **Follow all federal, state, and local chemical hygiene and safety regulations. Obtain a New York City Fire Department Certificate of Fitness for supervising non-production chemical laboratories.**
**6.** **Coordinate with the College’s Environmental Health and Safety Officer for disposal of chemical waste.**
**7.** **Track the use and consumption of all consumable supplies used in the laboratory such as reagents and media materials and submit in a timely fashion appropriate requisitions for the purchase of such supplies to ensure their continuing availability.**
**8.** **Maintain in good working order all specialized instructional equipment used for undergraduate courses, including regular routine damage inspection and preventive maintenance as specified by equipment manufacturers. The CLT will ensure safe storage and safe use of all equipment.**
**9.** **Track and maintain an inventory of all equipment and supplies. Where appropriate the CLT will contact specialty vendors concerning the availability, pricing, etc., of items in such inventories.** **Coordinate all local and external repairs and maintenance as and when required.**
**10.** **Ensure that College and department safety protocols are followed when using materials and equipment in lab courses and will be vigilant in identifying and reporting any actual or potential health/safety hazards or incidents.**
**11.** **Perform related work as assigned.**
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**
High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.
**OTHER QUALIFICATIONS**
**For appointment as a College Laboratory Technician, a person, in addition to possessing knowledge and skills related to the discipline and as described above, shall be a high school graduate possessing one of the following sets of minimum additional qualifications:**
**(A) four (4) years of work or experience appropriate to the requirements of the department at a level of competence comparable to that indicated by apprenticeship in the skilled trades;** **OR**
**(B) an associate degree and a minimum of two (2) years of experience of the type described above;** **OR**
**(C) a bachelor's degree in an area appropriate to the duties to be performed;** **OR**
**(D) an appropriate combination of at least four (4) years of education and work experience beyond high school. The candidate shall have the personal characteristics needed to work effectively with students and staff.**
**A bachelor's degree and laboratory experience are preferred.**
**COMPENSATION**
**$47,509 – $69,517; Salary commensurate with education and experience.**
