Combustion Turbine (CT) Technician

The Gilbert Power Plant comprises one 288 MW natural gas four-on-one combined-cycle train, as well as a 152 MW oil/gas-fired simple-cycle combustion turbine peaking unit. Located on a 232-acre site adjacent to the Delaware River in Hunterdon County. Originally commissioned in the 1920s as a coal-fired plant, it underwent a conversion in 1970 to utilize oil as its primary fuel and subsequently transitioned to natural gas.

Opportunity Summary

The Combustion Turbine (CT) Technician plays a crucial role in the operation and maintenance of combustion turbine-generators and auxiliary equipment, ensuring safe and efficient operation in compliance with environmental regulations. The position involves hands-on work with a variety of mechanical, electrical, and fuel-related systems, including performing repairs, troubleshooting, and calibration on complex equipment. In addition to technical expertise, the technician ensures adherence to safety protocols, maintains detailed records, and completes ongoing training to stay current with industry standards and operational procedures.

Primary Duties

Your scope of responsibility as Combustion Turbine (CT) Technician will include the following primary functions: 

Performs journeyman-level skills as a CT Tech – Operations, regularly starting, stopping, operating, and maintaining simple cycle combustion turbine-generators and auxiliary equipment. Observes and records readings from indicators and instruments to ensure safe operation within prescribed limits, while performing related incidental work as required. Operates and monitors plant and heavy equipment, including vehicles, cranes, telehandlers, mobile man-lifts, hoists, tractors, and fuel-related equipment. Performs periodic fuel oil inventories and sampling, oversees fuel oil deliveries, and ensures efficient operation of associated systems. Performs journeyman-level skills as a CT Tech – Mechanic, including disassembling and reassembling small plant components such as pumps and valves, routing threaded pipe or tubing, and conducting maintenance and repairs on station equipment, structures, and buildings. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, microprocessor, and electronic systems, including associated sensing, transmitting, indicating, integrating, recording, and regulating apparatus. Repairs, installs, tests, removes, and replaces motors, generators, rotaries, rectifiers, batteries, transformers, regulators, reactors, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instruments, controls, relays, communication equipment, and lightning arrestors. Reads and accurately interprets complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and detailed electrical and electronic drawings. Performs low-voltage readings to troubleshoot motor control circuits and carries out internal and external mechanical and electrical switching and tagging (Lock-Out-Tag-Out) to ensure safe operation. Performs tests, calibrations, and repairs on instrumentation, test apparatus, and laboratory equipment, including environmental protection and monitoring systems. Assists in executing maintenance plans by providing support with Lock-Out-Tag-Out procedures, equipment identification, troubleshooting, and work request preparation. Completes routine clerical work, including station logs (e.g., maintenance repairs and outage logs), time reports, and material requisitions. Works as part of a maintenance or electrical crew when required. Maintains current training requirements, including First Aid, CPR, OSHA, and other safety protocols, through web-based training modules such as GPi Learn, seminars, and/or other courses offered by NAES Corporation. Successfully completes company-provided training programs designed to develop skills specific to combustion turbine and combined cycle operations, including an oral board. Occasional travel as needed to support operations and maintenance activities at other power plant assets. Perform other reasonable duties and responsibilities as assigned by Management to support organizational goals and objectives.

Working Relationships

The CT Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager and takes general direction from the management team. Additionally, this position will coordinate with all other plant personnel to ensure safe and reliable plant operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. Must be able to be respirator qualified. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Occasional travel as needed to support operations and maintenance activities at other power plant assets.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position offers a Monday to Friday work schedule, during regular dayshift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation will range from $51.68 to $57.40 per hour as per CBA, and will include an annual performance bonus.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Extensive experience in a technician-level role within a power generation facility, specifically working with combustion turbines, auxiliary systems, and related equipment. Demonstrated expertise in performing journeyman-level skills for both operations and mechanical systems, including disassembling and reassembling plant components (e.g., pumps, valves) and performing low-voltage readings. Proficiency in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, including turbine-generators, microprocessor, and electronic systems. Thorough understanding of safety protocols, including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, OSHA requirements, and environmental compliance standards. Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and detailed electrical and electronic drawings. Strong analytical abilities to identify, diagnose, and resolve issues effectively under pressure. Proven ability to work effectively as part of a maintenance or operations team and provide direction to other team members as needed. Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
