Compensation Range

Annual Salary: $80,000.00 - $107,000.00 (Amount based on relevant experience, skills, and competencies.)

About This Job

The Commercial Payments Portfolio Risk Analyst will be responsible for ensuring proper credit & risk oversight for the Commercial Payment Products area of Commerce Bank.  The Portfolio Analyst is responsible for underwriting and credit review of high dollar commercial payment products to customers largely on unsecured terms.  The Commercial Payments portfolio is comprised of commercial card, merchant bankcard and other commercial payment products, including credit and non-credit based product offerings. The position will work with individual customer accounts in addition to performing segmented analytics on various Commercial Payments portfolios and industries from a credit and risk standpoint.  Commercial Payments Portfolio Risk Analysts are an important part of the overall risk management and oversight program at Commerce Bancshares, Inc.

Essential Functions

Underwrite requests within the Analyst’s approval authority making independent judgmental decisions and make effective recommendations to the Credit Manager, Commercial Payments Credit & Risk Officer, or Loan Committee which exceed the Analyst’s authority. Review portfolio reports (daily/weekly/monthly) for the various products in order to proper identify problem accounts and take appropriate action to reduce the bank’s risk of loss.

Analyze and evaluate complex commercial credits and utilize credit processes and systems to assign the appropriate risk rating

Utilize third party resources such as D&B, Equifax, Moody’s, S&P, IBIS World, AM Best, Bloomberg, etc. to evaluate risk on accounts & portfolios

Identify existing or emerging risks and issues within credit portfolio segments

Ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, laws, and regulations

Planning participative and adequate credit reviews utilizing a risk-based approach

Prepare portfolio reports summarizing the various portfolios from classified, non-performing, risk rating, delinquency, and loss standpoints in addition to performing other portfolio research and presenting those findings to senior management

Provide ongoing feedback to the senior management regarding existing or emerging risks or issues

Assist in strategic planning for the department’s key initiatives, identifying portfolio risks that should be targeted for review, developing scoping methodologies to sample portfolio segments, and improving work methodologies to make the team more efficient and productive in accordance with regulatory compliance and credit policy

Maintain knowledge of and control over the review progress and resolution of review issues and communicate progress or problems to senior management as deemed necessary

Work with Account Managers on select accounts and ensure compliance with credit policy

Identify existing or emerging risks and issues within credit portfolio segments

Support the development of lower-level analyst’s skills and abilities so they can fulfill their current or future job responsibilities more effectively

Prepare questions for interviews with current and prospective customers concerning their financial performance and outlook

Handle interviews and questioning with CFO’s, Treasurers, and Controllers necessary to complete necessary due diligence

Utilize technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of complex financial reviews

Improve existing workflows by recommending strategies and executing champion/challenger methodologies to better effectively mitigate risk on existing commercial payments portfolios

Oversee special projects as assigned and communicate conclusions verbally and/or in writing

Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

Intermediate understanding of corporate/legal structures and corporate governance documents and their respective relationships to effectively bind necessary borrowers

Intermediate working knowledge of business intelligence, data mining, analytics, transmissions, and strategy

Intermediate working knowledge of performance measures and management reports

Intermediate skill working with predictive credit scoring and modeling

Intermediate skill interpreting commercial and consumer credit reports and data and using that information to make credit decisions and recommendations

Intermediate knowledge of statistical modeling and its impact on policies, procedures, governing principles, and credit tools

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Knowledge of commercial and retail lending documentation and regulations

Intermediate skill spreading complex financial statements into the bank’s spread system software and other models which include financial default projections

Ability to develop knowledge of and maintain software that the Commercial Payments Credit & Risk Department uses in its daily activities (TSYS, Salesforce, Content Manager, etc.).  This may include meeting with vendors, attending forums and conferences, and informing the remaining team members of changes and upgrades

Ability to learn Commerce products, organization structure, strategic initiatives, management philosophy, and corporate culture

Demonstrated results-oriented and the ability to maintain high customer service standards

Intermediate presentation skills

Motivated and organized self-starter with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities

Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Products

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business Management or equivalent combination of education and experience required

3+ years of credit review, underwriting, regulatory, or credit risk management experience required

*Hybrid Schedule: In office 2 days per week

The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for any applicable differentials (geographic, bilingual, or shift) that could be associated with the position or where it is filled. At Commerce, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each situation. A reasonable estimate of the current base pay is $80,000 to $107,000  annually.
