Job Summary Supports the new Bristol West Commercial Auto Underwriting team. Experienced underwriter with intermediate underwriting skills and experience. Authorized to handle a variety of risks with moderate premium size and complexity within core industries and the early stages of non-standard industries/coverages. Engages in managing profitable growth of commercial Property/Casualty and Workers Compensation business, including transactions with increasing complexity, through proper selection, classification and pricing of risks within assigned territory/industry. Essential Job Functions Evaluates commercial business for risk acceptability. Accepts, modifies or rejects mid-sized premium bands, with moderate complexity, beginning to gain knowledge of non-core industries and coverage types. Reviews business relating to loss experience, inspection reports, file information, policyholder tenure, related policies, and nature of risk in accordance with company guidelines, standards and compliance with state laws. Handles referral escalations obtained from post validation team. Within core industries, verifies coverage eligibility and is able to provide a coverage comparison consultation to agents in assessing competitor quotes to policies. Understands policy contract language and uses approved classification systems, rating plans and selection standards to determine eligibility, desirability and proper pricing. Develops understanding of non-core industries and gains authority to evaluate the same. Reviews rating plans and modifications for renewal retention and/or new business growth. Evaluates and handles reinstatement policies to determine eligibility. Provides technical assistance to customers regarding coverage availability, policy and endorsement provisions, and underwriting acceptability for coverage in core industries. Identifies coverage weakness and/or products adversely impacting growth potential and escalates to leadership. Provides mentorship and support to other team members including underwriting philosophy, transactions and training. Functions as subject matter expert for core industries and programs to be utilized within new employee or gap training. Has a growing role in educating agencies on products, services, automation, underwriting standards and cross selling techniques to promote accomplishment of corporate goals under the guidance of a mentor/manager, with an emphasis on core industries. Begins to build and maintain collaborative relationships with agencies to further understand the external marketplace and priorities that are responsive to marketing, underwriting, retention and service goals. Attends meetings in the field and participates in the preparation of materials and the presentations at district or agent focus group events as needed. Attends regular field visits to create new business opportunities and improve policy renewal retention. Joins discussion in territory rate review meetings and state strategy calls, beginning to provide insight and recommendations to address rate need and rate fatigue, where appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned. Experience Requirements Related commercial underwriting experience: 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience preferred Small to medium commercial auto underwriting experience preferred Education Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent Bachelors degree preferred Physical Actions This role, whether performed virtually or in an office setting, will include normal and customary distractions, noise, and interruptions. Sits or stands for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Occasionally reaches overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Occasionally moves, lifts, carries, and places objects and supplies weighing 0-10 pounds without assistance. Listens to, interprets, and differentiates auditory information (example others speaking) at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Visually verifies and reads information. Visually locates material, resources and other objects. Ability to continuously operate a computer for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate keyboard and other office equipment up to a full work shift.
