Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspectors perform skilled mechanical inspections on commercial vehicles and review related records to ensure compliance with federal and State motor carrier laws and regulations and to identify potential safety problems and mechanical deficiencies; conduct mechanical inspections at crashes; and provide technical assistance to the NHP and the motor carrier industry on the regulatory and mechanical aspects of commercial vehicle safety. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspectors perform mechanical inspections on commercial motor vehicles and review related mechanical records to ensure compliance with state and federal commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations. This position will support the federal New Entrant Safety Assurance Program (New Entrant) by reviewing new interstate commercial motor carriers to ensure they have effective safety management programs. Safety reviews are conducted within 12 months of the carrier's entry in the program, or 120 days if the carrier transports passengers. This position requires understanding of motor carrier laws and regulations and the application of those laws and regulations during safety reviews; the ability to identify mechanical deficiencies and to determine safety deficiencies based on laws and regulations; the ability to conduct mechanical inspections of vehicles post-crash; the ability to provide technical assistance to NHP commercial law enforcement and the motor carrier industry on mechanical issues; the ability to read and understand business records; verbal communication skills for scheduling, conducting and explaining safety reviews; and writing skills necessary to complete state and federal reports. To see full Class Specifications visit: http://hr.nv.gov/Resources/ClassSpecs/Class\_Specifications-11\_0/ To Qualify: In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements: Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school, vocational school or the equivalent, and four years of journey-level mechanical work experience involving commercial vehicle maintenance, which included engines, brakes, suspensions, coupling devices, wheels and tires, steering and air systems; OR four years of work experience as a driver of any commercial motor vehicle which required a Class A or B Commercial Driver License; OR four years of work experience involving the mechanics, safety inspection, size-weight, registration requirement and load and safety regulations of commercial vehicles; OR one year of experience as a Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspector I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Incumbents must obtain and maintain the following certifications as a condition of continuing employment: North American Standard (NAS) Level I Roadside Inspector; NAS Roadside Hazardous Material Inspector; NAS Cargo Tank Inspector; NAS Passenger Vehicle Inspector; and NAS Other Bulk Package Inspector. Incumbents work unarmed in a law enforcement setting and may be exposed to a variety of potentially hazardous situations and substances. Incumbents may be required to be certified in Investigative Safety Analysis and/or NAS Level VI Radiological Inspections at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. This requirement will be identified at the time of recruitment. Special Requirements A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
