The Binghamton University Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships (EIP) provides a host of services and programs related to business development, commercialization and entrepreneurship that are available to students, faculty, staff, the greater business community and virtually anywhere. One of the cornerstone programs is the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator, located in downtown Binghamton. The Koffman is the home to several start-up companies and has a goal to foster economic revitalization throughout Broome County and the Southern Tier of New York state.
The Communications Specialist will report to the Koffman Executive Director at the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships (EIP) and collaborate closely with the staff in Research Advancement. This position provides critical support to a diverse team, with the goal of advancing Koffman's mission of startup growth, job creation, social equity advancement and brand awareness, among other objectives.
The communication specialist's primary purpose is to promote the programs and opportunities for startups offered through Koffman to its current member companies and provide assets for outreach staff to attract new member companies to Koffman. This staff member will be responsible for the planning and execution of strategic marketing initiatives using multiple marketing mediums. This includes professional writing (using AP style), visual content creation (such as graphic design and short-form video), social media, media relations, email marketing and virtual event creation and hosting. The successful applicant will work with the EIP Koffman Executive Director and Assistant Vice President and the entire Koffman Incubator staff to stay up to date on recruitment periods, company milestones and alignment with Koffman strategic goals. This position works with vendors for additional services such as commercial printing, branded apparel and creative services based on an annual marketing budget.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
+ Serve as the point of contact for internal and external communications for the Koffman.
+ Develop engaging cross-platform content to be used on social media, websites, videos, print, tabling and events.
+ Work with Research Advancement, Binghamton University Foundation and University Communications and Marketing to align with university brand guidelines and assess when additional support from their teams or freelance creative contractors is needed.
+ Coordinate with staff or vendors for photo and video production, including scheduling, logistics and quality review to create high-quality promotional content.
+ Develop written and visual content and distribution plan for monthly member newsletters, quarterly stakeholder newsletter and yearly Koffman impact report.
+ Manage contact lists on an email marketing platform for different Koffman publications, including but not limited to member companies, graduates, sponsors, Koffman board members, regional stakeholders and Binghamton University administration and alumni.
+ Manage Koffman website content and work with website development vendors for plugin and system updates and more complex changes.
+ Create and disseminate content covering ongoing successes of Koffman member companies and programs to be shared with regional and industry media on the Koffman website, email and social.
+ Develop an annual communications plan defining goal, marketing budget and methods used to monitor performance throughout the year.
+ Update and manage inventory of marketing materials for tabling events, package content for staff representing Koffman and its programs according to event focus and recruitment goals.
+ Support Koffman-based staff in day-to-day operations such as in-person event planning and set up, leading facility tours and building relationships with Koffman members.
+ Work occasional evening and weekend events and conferences to represent Koffman.
+ Design and implement monthly virtual events such as Koffman Webinar series, (ex. Accounting Help Desk) for Koffman members.
+ Prioritize tasks effectively to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
+ Remain flexible when managing shifts in priorities to support programs and/or staff.
Job Requirements:
+ Bachelor's degree in Business, English, Communications, Marketing, or related field
+ At least four (4) years of experience in marketing communications, or related field
+ Experience with content creation, graphic design, and brand management
+ Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud or other design tools
+ Ability to work independently
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Excellent interpersonal skills
Preferred:
+ Experience developing marketing materials
+ Experience collaborating with vendors, internal teams, or external partners
+ Experience coordinating photo and video production
+ Experience managing student interns
