Community Environmental Coordinator

Summary: The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) seeks a Community Environmental Coordinator to support environmental outreach and engagement with underserved and impacted communities. This role involves fostering collaboration, building coalitions, and advancing environmental best practices to ensure meaningful engagement in alignment with BOEM’s mission and Environmental Justice (EJ) strategies. The position requires up to 3,056 labor hours annually, with working hours aligned with BOEM’s Pacific Regional Office needs. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions: Support program offices, project teams, and stakeholders by planning and coordinating outreach activities for underserved and impacted communities. Develop and refine procedures for processing and incorporating public input, ensuring feedback aligns with BOEM’s purview. Create and maintain targeted contact lists of key stakeholders, including Tribal Nations, Alaska Native Corporations, Native Hawaiian Organizations, and local community leaders. Plan and execute engagement initiatives, such as community meetings, social media campaigns, and outreach events, tailored to the needs of target audiences. Develop Language Access Plans to ensure non-English speaking and limited-English proficiency communities can access information and engage meaningfully. Facilitate meetings, prepare agendas, and provide documentation to track outcomes and follow-ups. Establish mechanisms to reduce barriers to engagement, such as offering childcare, technical support, and travel assistance where allowable. Track and report on metrics for environmental engagement initiatives, including outreach effectiveness, stakeholder feedback, and input integration into BOEM decision-making. Build and maintain long-term relationships with community leaders, organizations, and other stakeholders to strengthen BOEM’s presence and trust within communities. Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge: Strong understanding of environmental issues, particularly as they pertain to underserved and impacted communities. Expertise in community engagement, coalition-building, and fostering collaboration. Knowledge of environmental justice principles and best practices. Proficiency in developing outreach materials, maintaining contact databases, and organizing events or initiatives. Strong communication skills, including the ability to curate targeted messages and engage with diverse audiences. Analytical skills for evaluating engagement efforts and ensuring alignment with legislative and executive mandates. Proficient in 508 Compliance Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent experience. At least two (2) years of relevant experience in environmental engagement or a related field. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience navigating environmental processes and building coalitions for underserved communities. Proven ability to plan and implement meaningful engagement strategies and outreach campaigns. Familiarity with metrics and reporting systems for tracking engagement efforts and outcomes. Experience developing language access strategies and reducing barriers to public participation The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $95,000 annually.
