Under this roof, we don’t back down from hard work– we support one another in pursuit of something bigger. We define the future while leading the present. And under this roof, we own our opportunities. Becoming the market leader only happens when everyone feels they have the opportunity, and the support, to thrive. We are GAF. And under this roof, we protect what matters most.
Job Summary
GAF R&D is looking for a computational scientist to develop and apply simulation methods for asphalt modification, transport and coating processes, including lab-scale and production-scale CFD (computational fluid dynamics) models. The ideal candidate will have experience with modeling newtonian and non-newtonian complex fluids as well as developing reduced-order models and digital twins based on those simulations. Activities will focus on the improvement and development of simulation methods, the experimental validation of those models and the optimization of equipment and processes to improve our roofing asphalt operations.
Essential Duties
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Identifying problems that are uniquely suitable to be solved using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach
Setting up, performing and analyzing computational fluid dynamics models for complex fluids and multi-component flow
Developing reduced-order models based on results from computational fluid dynamics simulations
Actively participating in project teams within R&D and operations
Writing project reports and presenting simulation results in internal meetings
Making simulation results available and usable by non-CFD experts
Qualifications Required
MS Degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience OR PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g. chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, physics, etc…)
Solid background in numerical methods and computational fluid dynamics of complex and/or multicomponent fluids
Experience using commercial or open-source CFD software (such as OpenFOAM, Ansys Fluent, etc,) as well as basic knowledge in programing languages (Phyton, C++)
Experience with the development and and experimental validation of simulation methods in an industrial setting
Experience working as part of a team and collaborating with experimental scientists to solve problems
Experience running simulations in Linux-based HPC clusters.
Travel Requirements: up to 10%
