Computer Science Internship (non-thesis): Build a Java priority-based scheduler
Introduction

The Digital Data Platform (DDP) is a fundament for ASML's computational lithography offering. It offers data ingestion, storage and processing facilities to application builders. Applications range from production critical machine control to big data analytics. DDP architecture is based on cloud concepts and technology but installed at customers on-premises in their production facilities. As DDP is critical to the chip production process, availability and quality are of the utmost importance.

Your Assignment

There are many applications running on top of the DDP platform. Depending on the application behavior, they may interfere with one another. For example, they may compete on computational or storage resources. Not all requests towards the platform are of equal importance: requests that deal with production critical processes must have precedence over requests for analytics applications. In case many requests are send simultaneously, applications should get their fair share of resources.

Your assignment is to support us in managing incoming requests in a way that resources are assigned based on priority and fairness. To this end we would like you to build a (reusable) Java library that schedules incoming requests based on: priority, origin and additional constraints such as the maximum of concurrent requests, requests per client, etc. The idea is to base this on fair scheduling algorithms as known from the networking domain.

Your profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

Are a bachelor (HBO or WO)student, studying computer science.

Have experience with Java (backend) developer.

Have knowledge of Spring Boot applications and preferably also Maven.

Have a good understanding how to build re-usable Java libraries.

Have good communication and writing skills in English and are pro-active.

This is a bachelor apprentice or graduation internship for a minimum of 3 months, for 4 to 5 days per week (at least 3 days onsite). The start date of this internship is as soon as possible.

Other requirements you need to meet

You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;

You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;

If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
