Confidential Survivor Advocate
The University of Virginia’s Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) is looking for a Confidential Survivor Advocate. The Confidential Survivor Advocate provides comprehensive support to students who have experienced sexual harassment, assault, dating/domestic violence, sexual exploitation, stalking, and other forms of interpersonal violence (or relationship and sexual violence). The Advocate acts as a confidential contact for affected students, assisting with crisis response, advocacy, accompaniment, and immediate and ongoing safety concerns and connecting them with appropriate University and community referral resources. The role involves offering trauma-informed care and maintaining confidentiality while ensuring compliance with Title IX and other relevant regulations. We are looking for someone to join a growing and dynamic team in the Well-being unit of SHW. Well-being encompasses health promotion, alcohol, and other drug prevention, hazing prevention, recovery support services, wellness coaching, and the student teaching kitchen. This role would be an integral part of our efforts to provide a comprehensive approach to sexual violence prevention and response.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Services (65%)

Provide immediate and ongoing trauma-informed advocacy-based support to students who have experienced interpersonal violence, including secondary trauma.Assess safety concerns and offer information on available resources.Support students in navigating University policies, procedures, and judicial processes related to sexual misconduct.Inform survivors of their Title IX, VAWA and Clery Act rights and provide support through the Title IX process including attending interviews and appointments upon request of the survivor.Coordinate support services with University and community partners (including Care and Support Services, Housing and Residential Life, Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health and Wellness Medical Services, University Police Department, UVA Women’s Center, Title IX Office and others).Participate in after-hours on call advocate rotation.Maintain confidential records.

Assessment and Program Management (20%)

Summarize de-identified data on service utilization.Conduct ongoing program evaluations and needs assessments.Collaborate with University and community partners by participating on committees and attending meetings to streamline and enhance support services.Maintain relationships with community partners including police, UVA Hospital forensic nurses, and local non-profit/community agencies.Attend relevant training and stay updated on best practices in survivor advocacy.

Outreach and Prevention (15%)

Work with the IPV Prevention Outreach Specialist and other Well-being Team members to facilitate education and training to students, faculty, and staff.Participate in prevention programs and training sessions to raise awareness about sexual violence and available advocacy and support services.Collaborate with key University partners to promote trauma-informed practices and prevention initiatives.Provide on-site support at campus events as needed.

Minimum Requirements:


Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: Two years of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in counseling, Social Work, Public Health, or a related field.At least two years of experience working with survivors of sexual violence or physical assault, preferably in a counseling or advocacy capacity.Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse student population.Knowledge of the Title IX regulations, VAWA, CLERY and procedural requirements.Ability to work collaboratively with other units/offices including Law Enforcement, Title IX, Counseling and Psychological ServicesExcellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.Experience working with multicultural populations, including AAPI, international, African American, Latinx, and/or LGBTQI+ communities.Familiarity with University resources and the higher education environment.


Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

About the Position

This position will require some nights and weekend hours and may get called to support a student after hours.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $55,000.00-65,000.00 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
