Conservation Lecturer Position | Science of Conservation of Materials and Methods I | Spring 2025 (CLT HTG 216)

The UCLA/Getty Interdepartmental Program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for temporary lecturer position to teach the course described below during the spring 2025 quarter. The spring quarter schedule is March 26 - June 13.
This appointment provides opportunities for interaction with colleagues, laboratory facilities and research infrastructure at UCLA and the Getty Villa. Through its collaboration with the Getty Conservation Institute, as a unit in the UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, and located in the UCLA Fowler Museum, the Conservation Program is part of a vibrant center of archaeological and cultural scholarship.

Science of Conservation of Materials and Methods I: CLT HTG 216
Recommended requisite: Materials Science 104. Introduction to physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of conservation materials (employed for preservation of archaeological and cultural materials) and their aging characteristics. Science and application methods of traditional organic and inorganic systems and introduction of novel technology based on biomineralization processes and nanostructured materials.

The appointment will be at the lecturer level and will be located in the Program’s research and training laboratories at the Getty Villa in Malibu and/or at our facilities at UCLA. Duties include preparation and delivery of lectures and laboratory practical sessions. The Program Laboratory Manager will assist the lecturer in obtaining lab supplies.

Candidates should hold a graduate degree in conservation from a recognized academic institution, with at least five years of experience in conservation practice. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous academic teaching experience both in delivering theoretical lectures and developing and supervising object treatments in the laboratory.
