Conservation Technician

The Conservation Technician will assist two full-time Conservators to support the daily operations of the conservation laboratory. Responsibilities include exhibition preparation, construction of enclosures, assistance with assessment and condition documentation, and basic repair and stabilization of collection materials. The person in this role will receive on-the-job training and will learn best practices following the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) Code of Ethics.

The position reports to the staff Conservator. The position will join the team within the Preservation Strategies Department led by the Head of Preservation Strategies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Performance:

Plays an active role in exhibition preparation and installation, including the creation of supports and mounts.Constructs or modifies appropriate custom protective enclosures for a range of rare, unique, and fragile materials.Prepares items for shelving, including binding pamphlets, inserting loose materials, and creating pockets.Assists with written and photographic documentation of materials for acquisitions, exhibitions, and loans.Under the supervision of conservators, performs basic to moderate repairs and stabilization for rare, unique, and circulating library materials.May assist in preventive conservation and preservation programs, including acquisition review and remediation.May assist in disaster response aiding in recovery efforts for any emergency events that may arise.Keeps statistics of preservation work.

Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a diverse environment.Effective oral and written English language communication skills.Maintain helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all library customers internal and external.Establish effective and supportive interdepartmental relationships and participate in cross-training opportunities to increase library and unit effectiveness and to effectively disseminate information.Communicate frequently and effectively with all university staff, faculty, and administrators in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information.When possible, participate in committees and teams within and outside the libraries to provide service to the Libraries, University, and the Community.Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion.In pursuit of the Libraries’ and University’s strategic objectives, modeling the University’s “DIRECCT” values (diversity, integrity, responsibility, excellence, compassion, creativity, and teamwork). 

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Skills, Training, etc.)

Essential:

High School diploma or equivalent education and experience.Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be consideredExcellent manual dexterity, attention to detail, and creative problem-solving skills.Initiative and openness to learning best practices in preservation and conservation.Excellent organizational skills.Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree.At least 1 year of library and/or museum experience.Experience in a related field: museum/archives/library, archaeology, chemistry, art handling, or fabrication workshop (wood/metal/frame shop).Interest in or experience in conservation and/or preservation.Experience working in a field or craft that requires hand skills.

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.Ability to handle sharp tools and small instruments.Ability to follow workplace safety guidelines as work may involve exposure to dust or mold.
